Winston Smith has long since given up on life. He is 39, thin and meager with a varicose ulcer on his leg, a pathetic alcoholic who works to disseminate lies that he knows are false and wrong, all the while harboring a hatred for the governing and controlling Party, the institution known as ingsoc (newspeak for English Socialism), and its head, Big Brother.
That is until he meets the charming, young, wild, and beautiful Julia. He falls for her and they begin a passionate affair as they try to maintain their bond, perhaps more physical than emotional, in spite of an organization that wants to use the sex drive as a means of control and with absolutely minimal privacy through surveillance and espionage.
An incessantly bleak yet brilliant book, 1984 offers a look into what could have been, what can be, and the society in which Orwell lived.
