Another Scam?
Starting Friday, Delta Airlines will be charging $15.00 a bag on checked baggage. Delta is one of many airlines who are beginning to enforce this policy.
Not only have the airlines tightened up on what they'll carry for free, but they've now much more likely to charge you for the extras. In the past you were unlikely to be asked to pay, especially if the checkin staff were busy, but now you're probably have to pay the extra charges.
I personally just do not get it. I mean gas prices have gone considerably down in the last few months, and ticket prices remain the same. I don't understand why a ticket fee that used to be able to cover the cost of checking baggage just suddenly doesn't. The other problem I see with the new fees are the restrictions the TSA still has about flying with liquids. Many times, I have to check a bag because it doesn't meet the liquid requirements, not because of the weight or size of the baggage. It's because of this that I see it all as one big scam, a scam like all the others, a way to get money out of us.
Novice budget travelers should learn to pack lightly before mastering any other money-saving technique. Now more than ever, airlines are imposing hefty penalties for heavy baggage.
