The Bowne House Commemoration Project
This project is a group effort both by the local students of East-West, and the parks department. All in effort to bring what was the only place available for religious freedom in the founding of America, more specifically Vlissingen. The Bowne House represents the generations of people who fought religious opposition against Petrus Stuyvesant (1602- 1672) the governer of the time, and were successful. The house is an artifact and the trees around the neighbourhood are there to commemorate the Quakers and the people who had a hand in founding, what was to become America. It signifies, their conceit for plants, their amour for diversity, and their heirloom for the comings generations to see and appreciate.
Our School have been chosen to play a role in something significant to the community and country. During the presentation day we had charts of the Remonstrant and a modern translation of it. Each chart explained near to a paragraph, each following a reworded version of the text.
We, East-West students had posted up in group around the environs of the ceremony. There were elected official there, as well as John Liu, who is running for comptroller for NYC. Also there were reportings from NY1, and WCBS. The ceremony began with greetings to everyone present, following a history lesson from a woman spokes-person (long speech, yet meaningful, however it could of been briefed). There after, Talia Morales sang, American the wonderful.
The others information spoken by the officials, were more history of the Bowne housing structures, also its various changes through the ages. Before the home is to be view by the public, the reconstruction plan must commence. It was quiet a learned experience. And a chance for the politicians to talk to the students of our school. There were many photo taken that afternoon in front door of the Bowne House. A long morning to meet and discuss this annual commemoration to John Bowne and the Bowne House.
