Changing the Words

In broad terms political writing is rank with misinformation, mistakes and spin. Orwell recognized this in His essay, Politics and the English Language. An example of this has been used rather recently in the request by the troop general in Iraq to have Obama send 30,000 more troops to bolster the effort. An effort was made when requesting these additional troops to ask for an, “additional surge of troops” Note the word surge, in the past a request for troops was often coined by the word escalation, however that word brings up past memories of Vietnam for many people so by avoiding that word politicians and the media have made the step towards making the war in Iraq more amiable to the American public.
