I chose this image because the stereotypical terrorist weapons is the AK-47, and the Counter-terrorist Weapon is the M-16.

What is terrorism

Terrorism is the policy of instilling fear and terror into a certain group, because another group wants to spread their belief and create a spectacle for the media to spread. Most tactics of terrorism is hostile take-over (air-hijacking, etc.), chemicals weapons, the use of W.M.D (weapons of mass destruction), taking Hostages, and the likewise.

    1) The way that hostile take-over, and hostage situations may occur is that, take a certain group who wants a certain sum of money. They may start an armed robbery of a large banking system, and hold hostage the executive manager, for the sum of money.

    2) Air-hijacking is the act of forcefully taking command of a commercial aircraft. Then the group can literally use it as a flying bomb, this is how 9/11 happen. As a result, security on airport property, has more than doubled, and many new restrictions have been instilled to prevent such a monstrosity as air-hijacking from happening again.

    3) Chemical based weapon have been a large threat, and can be considered a W.M.D. In January of 1999 President Clinton stated the was "kept awake at night" because of the fear of a biological-chemical incident, might occur. Then 9/11 occurred, now experts believe that in not a question of whether, but more like when a chemical attack will happen. This is major because looking back on Hiroshima, the nuke that was detonated over it not only decimated the city, but the surrounding areas suffered from radiation for years after that. Hundreds more died from poisoning, pollution of water and food, birth defects, and other forms radiation sicknesses. This is why Nukes have been banned since, but with rising tensions, the nukes that Nations already own may just see it's usage.

According to statistics, terrorism has been on a slight rise but none resulting in anything over 1,000 incidents/fatalities, but around the years 1996/1997 there has been a significant increase in both to about 1,300 incidents, and about 2,000 fatalities. But there is a slight drop in incidents, and a significant drop fatalities in from 1,998 to 2,001 where it sky rockets to about 2,700 incidents, and 4,500 fatalities; my guess is because of 9/11. Then both plummet in 2003 to about 300 incidents/fatalities. But my observation of the graph is that it before the 1970's terrorism was just a word and nothing more.

These are most of the major players that can be considered terrorist groups that have their share of recognition in more than four countries.

Methods of Counter Terrorism

There is quite a few ways that terrorism is countered, one of those reasons is as simple as negotiations. Negotiations are used when one or both parties don't want a violent encounter but will if necessary. The opposing parties will try to come to an agreement where both are satisfied. When Negotiations don't work, and the terrorist take their actions to the extreme, a group of intensely trained and disciplined Special Forces called Counter-Terrorist are sent in to accomplish mission meant to weaken the opposing side. Some missions may include assassination of a figure-head, rescue of hostages, prevention of a nuclear holocaust or other explosive threats.
And another on consist of non-violent methods like sealing the borders between the two countries, cutting off funding and/or trade to there area where they are most prominent. Also by  build Jersey barriers around Politically important buildings to prevent truck-bombing.

Importance

Terrorism is a major issue because people have the right to sleep soundly in their beds without the fears of someone bombing their home. Since 9/11, many people have been/are terrified of flying in aircraft's; many families have been divided by an impassable sea because some people dare not step foot in planes. Many restrictions are in place and now innocent civilians must suffer because terrorist use what ever tactics they can to implement fear. In addition,  thousands of dollars are used to repair structures demolished, replace hardware used, tend to injuries sustained. The people see their "terrorist" as heroes who want the best for the country; I see their logic, but why must they do it through senseless killing.
History

The word terror comes from a Latin word meaning "to frighten or scare. The term "terror cimbricus" was used to describe the state of panic and emergency where where Rome was in response to the approaching Cimbri tribe in the year 105BC. Then came the Jacobins who stated whom have cited the "Reign of Terror" during the period of the French Revolution. When the Jacobins lost power, terrorism was to become an abused term.  During November 2004, the UNSC (United States Security Counsel) stated that terrorism in any of it's forms is "intended to cause death or serious bodily harm to civilians or non-combatants with the purpose of intimidating a population or compelling a government or an international organization to do or abstain from doing any act" In addition sometimes terrorism is used to forcefully engage their target in war, such was the case with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand ("the shot heard 'round the world"), which started WWI, or the Holocaust which fueled WWII, The Bombing of Pearl Harbor that brought the U.S into WWII, Cuban Missile crisis that almost set fire to the Cold War, and some including me thinks that the president used 9/11 as an excuse to get our troops in Iraq, some including me think that the President Purposely let it happen to help start war. But regardless scholars still dispute whether terrorism dates back to the Sicarii Zealots, the Al-Hashshashin in the 11th century, the Narodnaya Volya during the year1878, or somewhere in between.

Dear MCruz,

I am doing a research paper on terrorism, and what you have written has really helped me. I would like to know where you got some of your information because to me I think some of it might not be true, but it also might be. I have found that the history has gone all the way back to the Zealots in the 1st century who fought againt the Romans in Jurusalem. I think I will  come back and read more and compare what you have written to what I find.

Interesting info.

I feel that you were clear and precis but i am not sure if all the groups listed and talked about are terrorist groups. i t is also interesting what the AK-47 symbolizes.
