Contents of a Lonely House

Chipped nail polish
found on hard wood floors
Oily and matted hair left on a brush
Lotion that clogs pores
spread out on the bathroom sink
Dying flowers in a cracked vase
Missing pages from books
slew across a tipsy bookcase
All in a house that has no owner

I love the mystery of this

I love the mystery of this piece. It reminds me of Ted Kooser's poem, "Abandoned Farmhouse," which begins "He was a big man, says the size of his shoes/on a pile of broken dishes by the house;/a tall man too, says the length of the bed/in an upstairs room..."

In your poem the "matted hair" left in the brush suggests (in a very eerie way) a family's history through these abandoned artifacts.
