Cram Time

Discussion
Sep 2, 2009

Now that I am a senior in high school college is one of my main focus'.  Where should I go? What will I do? When will I know where I am going? The thing that I am having the most problems with is the early dates for the application deadlines.  When I was younger and college seemed so far in the distance that I would never truly get there, the deadlines seemed to be later in the year than they are now.  Five of my seven applications are due on November first or second, with one on November fifteenth and the last one on December fifteenth.  Granted I will know where I have been accepted mostly by the end of January some of my acceptances or denials will not be received until mid March.  I don't quite understand why the application deadlines have to be so early on in the year.  Is it because the colleges want us to enjoy most of our senior year with out the stress of college applications to deal with? Or is it more for their own personal gain?  If it was for their own personal gain then wouldn't they not reply until later instead of moving up the date where they give us their response?  This is what I can't quite wrap my mind around.  It will be nice having most of my applications done by the first of November so I can relax for a good portion of the year.  But I don't really need from January until May to figure out which one out of seven schools I want to go to. I think it would be much appreciated to have the application dates pushed back for even a month to give me and my peers that extra time once school has started to pull it together.

The deadline for regular decision applications is normally between January 1 and February 1, depending on the college.  Every university and college has its own application deadlines, but they fall around the same time. Early applicants (early action, early decision or single choice early action) generally need to get their applications in by either November 1 or November 15.

Early College Application Deadlines and Regular College Application Deadlines

According to this article most of the deadlines in November are for early admission or early decision and then all regular admission deadlines are in December or January.  When in fact I have no deadlines that are after December fifteenth.  Although several of the schools that I am applying to are early admission most of them are not.  So then why is it that a majority of my deadlines are November first or second, when it is common knowledge that most regular decision deadlines are between January first and February first?

Dear Jordan:

I really enjoyed your article, "Cram Time," because it explained exactly how I am feeling right now. There is so much

I need to have done and I have no idea how I will be able to finish it all before the deadlines. Not to mention I wont even find out about my colleges until April so I get to worry about that for a nice couple of months.

One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: "I don't quite understand why the application deadlines have to be so early on in the year.  Is it because the colleges want us to enjoy most of our senior year with out the stress of college applications to deal with? Or is it more for their own personal gain?" I think this is a good question because its the same question I have been asking myself.  I have been wondering why our college applications are due so early, and I can't agree with the conclusion that its so us seniors can enjoy the rest of senior year because worrywarts like me will continue to stress, and sweat until we finally receive that acceptance, or decline, letter.

Another sentence that I was surprised by was: "According to this article most of the deadlines in November are for early admission or early decision and then all regular admission deadlines are in December or January." This stood out for me because I like yourself have no deadlines in Janurary. In fact I think most of my deadlines are in November and I desperately wish one of my deadlines could be in January.

Your article reminds me of something that happened to me. It's basically my life right now.

Thanks for your work on this. I look forward to seeing what you create next, because you addressed all of my frustrations in this article.

Dear Jordan,

I know how you feel. I have a spread sheet with everything I need to do, and when I have to have it done by. Honestly, I am starting to question the logic in that, because when I do view it, I tend to feel overwhelmed at the massive amount of work. The Common App has such false pretenses.  They make it seem like you fill out one form, do one or two essays and send it away to a bunch of schools.  That is all fine and dandy, but people forget to tell you about the large amount of work the supplements can be, one of my schools require an additional three short essays on theirs.  Hopefully over this long weekend I will actually get some of my essays done, and the all important "Topic of Your Choice" essay, which might as well be re-titled "The Essay That will Give you Nightmares: for the next several months".  We'll make it through, even as difficult as the task ahead seems.  Luck to all This Application season.

Dear Jordan:

I really enjoyed your post, "Cram Time," because it expressed pretty much exactly what I has been going through my head every day for the past little while-and probably in all of our classmates' heads. I've gone from begin completely relaxed and excited about college to completely stressed. Time really is flying by when it comes to college applications. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: "When I was younger and college seemed so far in the distance that I would never truly get there, the deadlines seemed to be later in the year than they are now." I think this is so relevant to me because within the past few months, the deadlines for college seem to be so much earlier in the year than I anticipated. I thought I would have a lot of time once the school year started to complete applications and actually decide where I'm most interested in going, but it seems like I have no time at all. Another sentence that caught my attention was: "I think it would be much appreciated to have the application dates pushed back for even a month to give me and my peers that extra time once school has started to pull it together." This stood out for me because I think the majority of high school seniors would agree with your opinion. It seems like there is such a rush to apply to the schools, and then such a long lag time until people find out about acceptance.Your post reminds me of something that happened to me. Well actually, it reminds me of exactly what is happening to me right now. And what I have heard happens to all high school seniors at this time of the school year. Hopefully we'll get through just like every other person seems to eventually!

Thanks for your work on this. I look forward to seeing what you create next, because it seems like we have a lot of the same opinions about the college process and I'm interested to see how things work out for the both of us! Best of luck:)

 Dear Jordan:

I was intrigued by your post, "Cram Time," because I had never really questioned why the deadlines were so early, even though they are sneaking up on us rather quickly. Thinking about it now, you make sense. Why do the colleges really need our applications so early?

One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: "Granted I will know where I have been accepted mostly by the end of January some of my acceptances or denials will not be received until mid March." I think this is important because this gives the student over three months to decide. Is that time really necessary? Or do college admissions directors trying to make us stress to get our applications in within three or four months of our senior year?

Another sentence that I read was: "Although several of the schools that I am applying to are early admission most of them are not." This stood out for me because it shows that these college application deadlines are not just by choice, we are forced to get our applications in on time, even though we don't choose to apply early admission.

Your post  reminds me of something that happened to me. This year, being caught up in school work, I realized I had no time to research for good scholarships. Deadlines do sneak up on us and I think high school juniors should begin college applications as opposed to starting them fall of their senior year.

Thanks for your work on this. I look forward to seeing what you create next, because I want to see what other people have to say and figure out why college applications seem to be so early. Why must we be pressured to apply for college, which could be one of the most important steps in our lives? I hope your application process goes well :)

Dear Jordan:

I really liked your post, "Cram Time," because it shows that you are thinking about what you are going to do with the next step in your life. I also liked that fact that it relates to me in that I also am in cram time to get into college and on with my life.
One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: "I think it would be much appreciated to have the application dates pushed back for even a month to give me and my peers that extra time once school has started to pull it together. " I think this is interesting because it would simplfy things greatly if i had a little more time for college applications.
Another sentence that I liked was: "I don't quite understand why the application deadlines have to be so early on in the year." This stood out for me because if the deadlines were pushed back it would take a lot less stress off of my life, and make part of my senior year easier. Your post reminds me of something that happened to me. One time i had to do an application for a summer class up at the University of Utah and i didn't understand why they made me apply eight months in advance. Thanks for your work on this. I look forward to seeing what you create next, because i enjoyed commenting on your posts, and good luck with the college applications.
