DIVERGENT: Which One are You?

Discussion

by: MrLevy

In Divergent by Veronica Roth, society is divided into five factions, with each faction dedicated to the cultivation of one important characteristic. On a specific day each year, and following a battery of tests, every 16-year-old must make the decision of which faction to join.

If you had to make the same choice as Beatrice, which faction would you choose? Tell us why.

Abnegation: The Selfless

The Erudite faction focuses on the pursuit of knowledge.

The Amity faction values peace and harmony above all else.

The Candor faction focuses on honesty, even when it is inconvenient or hurtful.

The Dauntless faction values fearlessness and bravery, and test this daily by attempting death-defying feats.

If I were to choose I would choose the Erudite. I would choose this group because they focus on getting knowledge. I like this group because I love to learn and would put 100% effort to learn. This group is different than others because some of the different factors that go into each group. In some groups you have to risk your life which is scary and wouldn't want to and just want to focus on my education and learning for a brighter and better future.

Great job with your paragraph. I wouldn't want to risk my life either.

Daniel, I also agree that this is a good choice. It is safe and you would learn a lot there. But I have a question for you. Is there a thing as too much knowledge in one place? People would disagree on how things should be done and they would all have a fair argument because they would all be smart and logical.

In answer to your question I don't think there is every too much knowledge for one place. I am saying this because the reason we go to school is to get smarter so if you continue to get more educated I don't think you can get to smart.

If you love to learn the Erudites is the perfect place for you. Also, you're right in that people shouldn't have to risk their lives. Loving to learn is different from how Will acts in the book as a know-it-all.

Faction Selection

Submitted by Chris S. on Thu, 2012-06-28 10:56.

When given a choice, I would choose the Dauntless faction because I am feeling fearless! Jumping off of a train sounds amusing because I want to see if I can survive such a dangerous encounter. I am not one to back down from a fight, I am fearless and brave, and test this daily be attempting death-defying feats. I am not a gazelle, I am a lion! I was originally thinking of joining the Abnegation faction but then I realized that I do not want to live my life as a wuss helping people all day. I was part of Erudite already so I want some change. Amity sounds boring, harmony is good, but not completely. While reading the book, the kids from the Candor faction sound annoying, so they are out of the picture. That is why I have chosen Dauntless as my faction.

I agree with your post that you choose do to what you believe in. I did the same exact thing just not the same group. I like how you also broke each faction down into why you don't like them.

I don't quite agree with your argument. I agree that jumping off a train and doing dangerous stunts like that would be fun, but, there is a fine line between fearless, and stupid. I also considered going to Dauntless for my faction, but then I realized that Dauntless would be too dangerous because they almost take daredevil stunts too far. People most likely get very hurt in Dauntless, and I am not willing to take that risk.

Thanks

I won't jump off any trains. Anyway, well written paragraph!

Saying you're a lion and not a gazelle is a good point when joining the Dauntless. All of your reasonings make sense for joining the Dauntless. However, don't just join because you're feeling fearless and excited but because you would be able to stick with it for your whole life.

If I could choose from any of the five factions I would choose the Dauntless. I would prefer that over everything else, because that is the only option that is suspenseful and exciting. Protection for others is something that I like to do. In real terms, what the Dauntless do, is basically the same thing that the US army does. In the US army people chose that they wanted to serve, so that they would protect the people of the USA. I would personally think that jumping of a train, and living, is fun.Overall, I believe that the Dauntless faction would be the best for me, as it is the most exciting, and it is the only one that you are serving for others, by protecting them.

I think that this is a well written paragraph. Although you have good reasoning I still most likely wouldn't have chosen Dauntless. Although it looks like fun and I would enjoy playing hero and saving others, it would be too dangerous for me.

Submitted by kengok on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:30.

I disagree that dauntless is the only faction with excitement. In Erudite, the faction of intelligence and knowledge, you can some thing discover new ideas and facts that can make an effect on the world. Wouldn't it be amazing to be famous for discovering some thing new! It sure would to me.

The Dauntless

Submitted by irinie on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:03.

I could fit into many of the factions that occur the book Divergent. I could be a kid who speaks the truth and never lies and be in the faction Candor. I could also join the Erudites and value a good education for myself. However, the best fit for me would be The Dauntless. From seeing what it is like from Beatrice's perspective it seems like a great place to be. Even though people are being beat up and dying from jumping off a train, the thrill and action make it seem worth it. Also, the stages of initiation put the new Dauntless to the test to see if they really are fearless and strong or not. Also, making it through all stages in The Duantless would earn an initiate respect where in other factions like Abnegation you are not to feel respected, only respect others. Although being in The Dauntless would be hazardous, it's a risk I'm willing to take.

I disagree with you. I do not

Submitted by charlottew on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:26.

I disagree with you. I do not believe you are sutable for the dauntless faction. I think that you wouldlike a life without rules and the thrill of being in that faction but I don't think you would want to risk your life each day let alone get punched really hard in the face.

I would choose Erudite

Submitted by kengok on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:12.

I would choose Erudite because I believe that the key for a life, is knowledge and what you can do academically. In the future, everyone gets jobs and in order to get good jobs that get you a good profit, you need academic skill and knowledge to do so. I have never heard about anyone without good academic skill that gets a good job, besides entertainment such as sports, that get a good job, let alone succeeding. I think being an Erudite is the gateway to a successful life.

Cool

Nice job dude. I used to believe that knowledge was the key for life, but now I'm in Dauntless.

I see a lot of logic in your paragraph. It is well written and I can relate to that completely. I think you made a good choice and I like how you think that knowledge is the key to good life. It is true that you can get very good jobs as a smart person, and, consequently, an Erudite.

I agree and disagree

Submitted by angads on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:24.

I liked how you said that without a good academic skill you cannot get a good job. I believe that it might be possible to get a good job without having a good education. For example, the people that work in the army, like a four star general, has a good job, he is paid well, and he might not have had a good education. I still agree with you, as there is a higher chance to get a good job if you have a good academic skill, but it is not impossible to get a good job even if you don't have an academic skill.

I agree that with knowledge

Submitted by irinie on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:29.

I agree that with knowledge you earn a good job. Although intelligence is an important aspect in someone's life, in The Dauntless you get a job just for becoming a member and most of the jobs give a good amount of money. So, without knowledge sometimes people can earn a job.

Factions

Submitted by shanez on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:05.

I would definitely chose to become an Erudite. The Erudite faction focuses on intelligence and avoids ignorance. All of the factions relies on intelligence to some extent. Although the Abnegation despise the Erudite, they also have to be intelligent in order to become selfless. They have to formulate ideas of how to aid the faction-less, and that requires intelligence. If I had to chose factions, it would definitely be Erudite.

Saying that intelligence is

Submitted by irinie on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:12.

Saying that intelligence is needed to some extent in every faction is totally true. To be part of The Dauntless you need to have skills and in order to have those skills there is some form of intelligence. Also, in the Amity to always be thinking of a solution for peace you need to be smart in some way. However, in the book Christina tells Will how the Erudite can be know-it-alls so if you become Erudite don't take advantage of your intelligence.

I would choose dauntless

Submitted by charlottew on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:11.

I would choose dauntless faction. I interpreted that in the Dauntless section, there aren't many rules which is a really good thing for me. Personally I love the feeling of letting go and doing whatever I want. Honestly, I wouldn't enjoy risking my life everyday like the dauntless do but the rush in my blood from jumping of a building or a train would certainly excite me. Other factions besides dauntless would not suite me either. I am not a Abnegation because with that many rules an not being able to look in the mirror, I would clearly not survive. I would not fit in the Eritude faction either. Although I love learning and reading, I would not like to have my whole life focused on acidemics. Amity and Candor faction are also not the place for me because I don't value peace and harmony above all else and I am not honest even when it is inconvenient or hurtful. The Dauntless faction is where I think I would best belong.

My Choice

Submitted by justinf on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:14.

If I had to choose one faction, I would definitely choose Amity. I would choose Amity because Amity values peace and harmony above all else. My logic is that if you value peace and harmony there will not be any conflicts in life. Besides the aptitude test and the choosing ceremony there won't be many problems in life. Everything would be peaceful and happy. I'm not saying that all the people in Amity make the same decisions or have the same opinions but they would make decisions peacefully. Amity people wouldn't fight or start a war over opinions as maybe Dauntless would, they would talk to each other and make a decision that would keep peace and harmony.

Although i picked The Dauntless i completely agree with you in that with The Amity peace would be possible. Starting fights over stupid things is...well stupid. However, if people portrayed The Amity faction and talked about it to come to a solution of peace instead of beating each other up the world would be a better place.

I would also like a life

My choice

Submitted by AllenX on Thu, 2012-06-28 11:29.

If I were to chose which faction to join, I'll chose factionless. Even know people in the story thinks factionless is the worst, but I think it in a completely different way. Each faction has their own ways of living, and you have to follow exactly what the faction leader told you to. I want to live by the way I want to, not by the way others force me to. I really don't like when people make me or force me to be what they expected to be. It's like taking all your personalities away in a different way, and slowly changing you into someone that you don't know. For example, all the people in Dauntless are expected to be brave and fearless. Seriously, would you really risk your life and jump off a train? Even when your if you say yes, there's always some fear in you. If I were to join abnegation, I'll probably suicide. They make you to forget yourself and help other people. It's not anything bad to do, but did you ever want to be treated the same way? If your a Candor, would you really share all the truth. There's always something you don't want to share with some. So they have no right to force other to tell them the truth. Even know all the factions works together in some way. I want people to know the real me, I want them to know my real personalities. So I rather be factionless instead of being someone that I don't know.

Great

I like how you supported your argument by comparing the other factions with something that people may not like. For example, "If you are a Candor, would you really share all the truth." I liked how that quote showed that it is good to be Candor, but not all the time.
