Do looks matter?

I saw the play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand a while back and it made me think. In the play the male lead(Cyrano) is in love wt a distant cousin, but doesn't think he could be loved by anyone because he has a big nose, yet he is an amazing poet, soldier, and many other things.

How many times does our life depend on how we look, of course actors and models, but what about in that interview for that job? Will the person with the more standard face have a higher chance of being signed up, rather than the one that might have more credentials. Could it be how the individual thinks of themselves that affects the decision?
