Does Schooling Interfere With Our Education?

Discussion
Sep 11, 2012

This question is of interest to me because I think at a certain point in our high school career, certain things distract and take away from the actual education we want to learn for the field of study we want to go into for college, and to get a potential job in. There is a quote from Mark twain who said "Don't let schooling interfere with your education." I think that by Senior year, we should only take classes in the field(s) we know we are going to study in college. For example, I am going to study art so there is no reason for me to still be studying math and science after doing so for the past 12 years. It's just too stressful having to worry about all those other classes that I don't even like and won't get a good grade in because it's not a strong point for me.

School Should Change!

Dear Aundraya,

I am interested in this topic as well. School most of the time for me, doesn't provide education, just stress and wasted time.

One of things you said I found interesting was "certain things distract and take away from the actual education.." and I agree. I'm not really learning anything, and haven't for a while. In school it's more about getting the credits and what I have to do to get them. There is no actually learning, so it is wasted time even though it must be done for a diploma.

Another thing you said was "There is a quote from Mark twain who said "Don't let schooling interfere with your education." Sometimes it feels like repeating middle school with a lot of the classes and the learning isn't there it's just repetition. I think school should be focused on what your interest is, after you have the basic learning and instead of repetition, your classes should be based on what you need and are interested in, especially by junior and senior year.

Thanks for your post, I look forward to more from you.
