Earthquake story response

I was amazed by Marianne Riley, “The Spirit of Japan” on quakestories because
it talked about how well the country handle the earthquake and about
how culture influence people to act the way they did towards the effects
of the earthquake.
One
sentence Riley wrote that stands out for me is: “What we see though, is
how the Japanese wear masks of composure and patience although they are
terrified in reality. I see on TV how the Japanese wait quietly in
lines for hours to get into supermarkets where everyone has a limit on
how much they are allowed to buy.” I think this is admirable because
people usually do not react with such peaceful attitude when it comes to
disasters like this. The way the Japanese people reacted was in an
unselfish way and they all helped each other. I actually think that the
country is doing a good job in trying get back to normal. The people
have a very positive attitude.
Another
sentence that interest me was: “For now, their greatest concern is not
business but rather the well-being of Japan. At the time of crisis, the
country acts as a whole and works for the greater good.” This stood out
for me because it seems that the country is taking actions to help the
people. It is good that in times like this the country makes sures that
the people is moving on well rather than how businesses are affected.
I
agree with Riley that the Japanese ideas of gaman and gambaru have
helped the people confront these tough times. The culture and the ideas
implemented to the people have helped the country move on without any
chaos.
What
I appreciate about this writer’s work is that she connected the
attitude of the people to the ideas that are implemented in Japan. I
look forward to seeing what she writes next because this article was
very interesting and I liked it.
