Escape From Alcatraz

Discussion
Feb 24, 2012

This article talks about three men who are said to be the only successful escapist of Alcatraz. John and Clarence Anglin and Frank Lee Morris were the three men who somehow managed to slip away from the constant and heavy security of Alcatraz Prison.

The elaborate plan of the these three men was thought out, reorganized, and worked on until almost perfect. They began their escape by chipping away at an air vent that lead to outside. They made fake grills out of cardboard to cover the holes and help them to blend into the ceiling.

On the night of their escape John, Clarence, and Frank put in dummy heads that they had prepared for the night of the escape. The heads were there to cause less attention and suspicion. The thought was that when guards walked by they would see the back of the head under the covers and assume that all three prisoners were there.

The heads were made to be as close to realistic as possible. They three men collected hair from the barbershop and began to connect the hair to the head to make it look real. Once the heads were in place the three men crawled out the air vent and climbed a 15 foot fence. The men were never seen again. Four days after the escape a bag of pictures was found in the water. The pictures turned out to be Clarence Anglin’s.

Apart from these three men there have been 36 escape attempts; one drowned, six were shot to death, and five were not found, but are assumed to have drowned. The rest of were captured and none that we no of have successfully got off the island and back to mainland.

Alcatraz is a place full of stories that could fill our days with conversations. The men mentioned in this post is only one of many!

Have you ever seen the television show about Alcatraz? I personally have never watched it but I wonder if that tv show has any truth behind it, like if the stories they do on the show are about people like this who have tried to escape or something. You can tune in on FOX to watch the show, maybe it could provide some insight.

Alex,
To put it simply, your topic is awesome. Alcatraz strikes me as being a very fascinating topic and I love mysteries, such as the fates of the men who successfully escaped from the prison. I would be really curious to read something in your paper about the possible conspiracies or ghost stories associated with the prison.
Basically, you should know I am going to ask for a copy of your paper.
Thanks!
Erin

Oh my goodness!! This topic is so interesting. Once i started reading just this little information you had about the escape it made me want to read more and more. I was drawn in instantly! I was wondering if you had ever heard of any movies about your topic or short films so i could possible see it. I really want to read your paper!

Question

So if 8 other people were never found, why is it assumed that they drowned and they are not credited with escaping? If the other three men were never seen again then it is possible that they may have drowned and yet they are credit with successful escapes but in reality, they could have gotten just as far as the other 8.

Kinda Freaky

Alex, Alcatraz is probably the coolest topic i have heard of anyone doing. This past summer I watched the movie called, Escape From Alcatraz, and found it really interesting. We then went and visited San Francisco and looking at Alcatraz from the San Fran was slightly eerie. It was weird to think that it used to be a prison with some of the most dangerous criminals. It would be interesting to know if there is a current jail that took over after Alcatraz was shut down.

Fascinated!

I am very fascinated by this topic, Alcatraz is a place of much historic presence. Even the location of this historic prison is amazing. Who would have thought an island would make a semi perfect prison. There is a movie that shows how they pulled it off, these convicts were some what brilliant for this legendary escape which was on for the records. I wish we knew what happened to these men, perhaps it will be known some time in the future. I am anxious to read your final copy.
