Frosty Refresher
The picture “Frosty Refresher” is a portrait photo. When I was on vacation in Barbados and I was walking down the street in what they call the city this man selling snow cones caught my eye. First, I thought it was somewhat ironic that a man selling snow cones would have a cart with a Corona beer umbrella on it. This is just because snow cones are for children. Although that is humorous it some what captures the culture of Barbados in a nutshell.
This picture had many places to lead your eye to. Starting with the umbrella in the upper right corner to the Bajan man and then around to the rest of the city. The man's head is on a PowerPoint. The photo also has good balance because it has A-symmetry. The A-symmetry is the man on the one side while his cart is on the other half.
This was a mediocre printing experience. I mostly managed this on my own with out a lot of help from my teacher. I guess with more practice you can figure out what you need to do with out a lot of outside help. I ended up having to burn in the sky a little bit. I think that my matting was pretty good to. One problem was that the photo was off to the right a little bit, which isn’t too noticeable. Other then that, the matting experience was pretty good.
The title “Frosty Refresher” adds to this picture because a snow cone is a frosty refresher. First it will make you wonder what the “frosty refresher” is, but then when you take a closer look you will realize he is selling snow cones. I think that when viewers look at this picture they will laugh at the irony of the Corona beer umbrella and the selling of the snow cones. I think if I could change anything it would be that I had a little bit more of the umbrella in the picture and the mat was straighter.

When I first saw this
When I first saw this photograph, I instantly thought of Garry Winogrand. My eye travels instantly to the man because of the diagonal made by the umbrella stem, and the support wire on the opposite side of it. It also helps that his head is directly on a powerpoint from the intersection of the first vertical and last horizontal third lines. The horizon is slightly tilted, like a lot of Winogrand's photographs. There are also other diagonals made by the building on the background which leads you into the man's head. The buildings also help create an urban mood, and this is furthered by the man on a bike, selling snow cones. Because I have never been to a tropical place, this instead makes me thing about somewhere in the southwest rather than an island. Somewhere near Florida, because the architecture used reminds me of when I went to vacation to Florida.
