Getting to know their lifestyle and form of government in The Giver

I am reading The Giver, by Lois Lowry right now. The book is okay, but getting to know about the lifestyle and their form of goverment is kind of confusing. It isn't something i am quite used to. I have never heard of when someone turns twelve, they are called a "twelve", very weird.

I thought pages 15-25 were very interesting because it seems like everything is based on a very isolated enviroment, everything is very organized and plain. It seems as if the story was based on a black and white setting where there was no color in the world, because of the way the characters acted. It seems like they have no freedom.

One line from this part of the book that stands out for me is: "My ceremony as a Twelve." this stood out for me because i really didnt quite understand what was going on, and what he really meant. It seems as if his ceremony on becoming a twelve was like the border between children and becoming an adult. Is this like another version of a guys 18th birthday?

Another line that stood out for me was "What is this this comfort creature?" I though this was pretty funny because it was actually a stuffed animal. It suddenly reminded me of when i was little, and how i liked stuffed animals. It brought back a lot of memories.

This section of The Giver reminds me of something that happend to me. One time I also encountered a kid that was different from me. I was at a family dinner party, and the kid was very noisy and disruptive, although his parents didn't do anything. I thought the child was very spoiled. I was suprised because i thought all children would have been like me, but in the end not everyone is the same. I grew up in a different enviroment and experienced more than him. We were very different although we were in the same family.

What's probably going to happen next is Jonas will eventually become a twelve and receive new assignments that he will need to fufill.

I am looking foward to reading the rest of this book because i want to know how Jonas puts up with this way of living and i want to know what will actually happen next.

i've read the giver too, and the fact still remains that the book is based around a very strict government. it's shows how the gov't brainwashes the people and uses them as puppets. twelves are those who have the physical body of an adult, so yes, it is the coming of age. the stuffed animal part always surprises me to see how much the gov't controlls their minds. oh, and the person on the front page is the giver, obviously. but whats a giver without a reciver...

I also think that The Giver is a really good book. It is a book that I can read and not get bored of because it is just so interesting and new things are happening in this book. I can not put this book down and I think this book is really cool. You said that they have no freedom, I do agree on you with that because I think that Jonas doesn't have any freedom at all because he is just so busy with all his training that he has no time at all. I am up to the part where he meets the Giver and I think it is going to be really interesting about what is going to happen next and I wonder what advice the Giver is going to give Jonas.

I just recently finished the book and I really liked it. I noticed that there are many different types of governments in which brainwash and control their people in many different ways. The government in this book brainwashes their people into thinking that everything is perfectly fine and they make their people think that there is only one way to accomplish something in life.
What the book means by a twelve or a eleven is that every time a person "grows a year older," they earn a different gift and it is very rewarding to them.
Jonas discovers that there is way more to life than the government is leading them to.

Well sometimes you have to get use of something that is not there for a long time. I mean that from this book i believe that you can't live here for a long time. In my opinion maybe i can live here for quite a long time. I'm use to following rules because my mom trained me and i know when to follow rules and when not to follow rules. so i guess that we have different things to like and when not to like.

I loved the Giver. It's by far one of my favorite books of all time. This book reminds me of The Handmaids Tale, which is a book about America after the constitution has been suspended. The people, especially the women, have no rights. It's really good and more intense, however I enjoyed the Giver more. It's also a lot like Anthem, by Anne Rand, which is again more intense than the Giver but I still enjoyed the Giver more.

This book is one of my all time favorites. First of all, the plot is one of the most original and creative story lines I have ever come across. I am always telling people to read this book because it changed my life and my writing style. The one part that stood out to me more than anything else was when the main character sees the color red for the first time. The reader does not know that in this restricted society, there is no color until that point. And Lois Lowery does an amazing job of conveying the idea of seeing color for the first time. That is a difficult task because most people are so used to seeing the color red, they would have a hard time describing it. Anyways, AWESOME BOOK.
