Global Snakes and Alternative Ladders

Michael and me(ram) are going to work together on the issue of global warming. We are going to use and alter snakes and ladders so as to show people that current energy sources are bad and the use of alternative source of energy is very helpful for us. Our plan is to basically put Crude Oil as snake so that whenever  a player hits it he or she has to go back down and for ladders we are thinking of using clean sources of energy. We are still not sure how to make it more interesting though.

UPDATE

So after alot of thinking we  have decided to skim it down to 25 squares and put facts about global warming in each of the squares. We decided to skim it down because we are going to put facts in each box about global warming. Having 50 facts is going to make the game very big and it will get boring. So we are going to have 25 boxes each one of them is going to have an interesting fact about Global Warming. We had think alot to get to this design. At first we thought of putting batteries which would symbolize the alternative source of energy but then it would not look good as a ladder since it would not stretch out. So we have to think about something else. However the idea of putting facts is going to make the game very interesting. So we are done with the concept of the game and now we are going to work on the elements of the game and what kind of characters are players going to be.

UPDATE

So we have thought of making the game with 50 boxes because having 100 boxes is going to be very big. Since this is going to be a game about Global Warming we need to include more things about the topic and how we could make people aware about the topic because having plan snakes and ladders just changing the snakes and ladders would not make it of any use to spread knowledge. So in my group we are now thinking of making it more interesting.

UPDATE So after a lot of

UPDATE

So after a lot of brain storming we have decided on our final product which we believe would be entertaining and informative both at the same time.

This is our final game:

1.Components: Cars(pawns), Fuel Pumps(Snakes), Shortcuts(Ladders), Different Facts about Global Warming(On each          square).

2.Game Space: A basic Snakes and Ladders board modified into a road trip sort of game board where there will be gas stations, shortcuts and many other interesting facts on the the way. The Cars(pawns) will move forward on the road.

3.Rules: Each player starts from Home(square zero) and then all the players role the dice whoever gets the highest number goes first and then players go in descending order as per the number they get on their first role. Then the players role the dice again and move as many steps as the number on the dice and this goes on until only one player is left on  the board. When moving on the board if a player lands on a Gas Station( which would have a bad fact about Global Warming) he or she has to go back down to the box it says on the gas station and if the player lands on a shortcut(a way to stop Global Warming)he or she would skip multiple number or steps and directly to the next destination.

4.Goal: Well this is not an everyday Snakes and Ladders and so the goal is not going be only to go through the whole board and reach the last box before anyone else. The goal is in fact going to be to achieve a good knowledge of Global Warming by the end of the game and the person who does that will be obviously the first person the reach the last box since he or she will be the first to go through all the boxes and achieve all the knowledge in the game

The Sub Goals: To avoid all the gas stations which are bad for the environment and also bad for you as player since they throw you couple of steps behind. The player should also try and go to the shortcuts which would have ways to solve Global Warming and this would also be good for the player since he or she will leap forward a couple of steps.

5.Core Mechanics : The only core mechanics of this game are the dice which a player has to role to start the game and then move forward. The player roles the dice and then moves ahead equivalent number of box to the number on the dice.

6.Choice : The only the choice the player gets to make is to choice what colour of car he or she wants.

So this our final plan for the game we have designed it using the concept of Snakes and Ladders and disguised  with the social problem of Global Warming.

The whole game is complete

The whole game is complete so now I would like to give a final over view of the game. Now Snakes and Ladders is a very simple game and is not very complicated like the monoploly or any other game that goes on for a long time and that is what I love about the game. You do not have to commit hours into it but still can have fun playing it.This game is transformed into a serious issue and so we needed the game to be light and fun so that people actually pay attention to the message and knowledge that we are trying to put through and the game only. After wondering for a while we decided on the issue of Global Warming. This issue is a very well known issue but people still have many sterotypes and lack of knowledge about Global Warmng and so we decided to make the game around this issue. However how could we not make the game boring but still spread awareness about this issue. So my we came with this really good idea about having facts about Global Warming on each of the squares. The way to stop Global Warming would be on boxes with shortcuts and the facts that show what leads to increase in Global Warming will be on boxes with Gas Sations. This is going to be a very good game and you might have already read about the specs of the game in the previouse post.

We are done with designing

We are done with designing the game and the game looks very good. The whole game looks like a road map which has things written on them. We started playing with a couple of people. Since the game is just like Snakes and Ladders we did not need to explain to people how to play the game and just started it. As we were playing the game everyone was reading the fact on the particular box that they landed but no one read the same fact twice. We were having so much fun and learning at the same time. The game turned out to be much better then I imagined it to be. We have achived perfection in spreading knowledge about Global Warming and people did not get bored with it. This was possible according to me because of the the conept we chose and made it simple and fun. I hope you like our game :)

I played your game and i though it was actually pretty fun and it also thought me about global warming. Whenever i landed on the spots where you must go back it thought me all about global warming. I learned about how sea levels rised and how we play a major role in global warming. I also learned about how what we can do to stop global warming or things that may cause global warming to slow down.

Your game is very intresting! I just played it and it really made me think about global warming. I think it's really cool how you guys transformed a regular game that everybody used to play when they were little-- Snakes and Ladders-- into a game about serious global issues like global warming. The energy levels on the ladders were very creative too. Good job!!! I learned from your game some of the things that cause global warming.

i agree

I played your game and it was actually pretty fun.  I learned alot more about global warming just by playing the game.  When I landed on a gas station I got frustrated but then I got interested with the fact the space gave me.  Even though I did not win I enjoyed the game.  I think your game board was very well thought out and I appreciated that because it made the game looked interesting when we first saw it.

I think you guys could have

I think you guys could have made the board bigger.  In your blog, it says that the board is supposed to be 50 squares but you only did half of that.  The facts that you put on the board were facts that most people already knew about.  I think you did a great job on the survey and asked appropriate questions to get my opinion.

hats off to you guys nice

hats off to you guys nice job. It is stuff like this that makes me want to become a tenth grader. I mean like seriously what an awesome idea. Your game was uch better than the other ones we played that is for sure. I really had quite a fun time even though I didn't. Your group gave snakes and ladders a whole new global definition.

I played your game and I though it was fun, but it could do with some adjustments. The topic was interesting, and it made me want to see what the game was about. The game board also looked interesting because we noticed it had facts. Also, the rules were helpful, but they didn't have all the necessary information, so some of us were questioning some of the rules. The actual game was fun, and exciting but it was a bit too short. The game was done within about 5 minutes, meaning it didn't last very long. The idea for the game was good, it was just kinda of confusing (ex. without prior knowledge, we wouldn't have known which way to move the pieces). Also, the facts were interesting. One thing I really liked about your game was the snakes, or in this game, the crude oil which made you have to go back a certain amount of spaces. It was a good idea, and it was funny when we saw each other getting sent back. Our group got very competitive while playing this game, so it got interesting. People were accusing others of cheating and everything. I think this game was really fun, and enjoying, it just lacked a few elements. Overall; Good job.

I think that the game Global snakes and alternative ladders is a very good game although it is easily beaten.I think you guys should work on making  it longer somehow. If you guys can make it longer you guys can have a really good game

This was a very fun quick game. I enjoyed reading the facts that were on the game board. They definetly taught me alot about the enviornment and it's problems. The rules were very clear. However, if you're planning on building off of this game, you might want to make it a little longer.
