The Gulf Of Mexico Conflict
I'm learning more about the Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill right now, and in particular what i'm wondering about is : "How will this problem affect the society in the future?" I was researching this question online, and this article came up. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/06/us/06spill.html?scp=1&sq=wildlife%20in%20gulf%20of%20mexico&st=cse
This stood out to me because the title. It is saying how the Caps slow loss of oil, but the engineers are moving cautiously. I think this is was interesting because they probably they move slowly i guess because they think that if they don't move carefully that they could make the situation worse. Also the picture is a bit interesting because it shows these men in suits helping to clean it up a bit.
"By the end of the month, it planned to replace the newly installed capping device with one called an “overshot tool,” which is heavier and more tightly sealed. The tool would not only direct the escaping oil from the runaway well to a containment ship, but also be outfitted with a containment drum, so that oil collection would not be completely interrupted if a hurricane forced the ship to leave the area."
The quote i choose here is basically saying that by the end of the month they are going to try and fix the problem but inserting a certain tool. This tool is much heavier and it will help tighten it. I guess that the tool is suppose to help keep the oil in it's one place and prevent it from spreading into other places. I guess that this is a good idea because, other environments and animals will not yet be affected by the oil spill.
I think this is a helpful idea because, maybe this idea could work. I also think that this area should be watched just in case of an natural disaster to make sure that this idea is successful. If this idea is successful i think that if another crisis like this were to happen then they would know what to do.
This is an image of a bird who habiat i believe was effected by the oil spill.

Dear Rachel:
I enjoyed your post, "THe Gulf of Mexico Conflict," because it was very informative. I learned a lot about what they are doing to fix this situation.
One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: t"he engineers are moving cautiously. I think this is was interesting because they probably they move slowly i guess because they think that if they don't move carefully that they could make the situation worse." I think you are right in saying so because if they were to fix it quick, they might become carelessly and a new problem may arise. However, if they move any slower it will result in more loss of life, and great eco-damage, and loss of even more millions of dollars.
Another sentence I saw was: "The tool would not only direct the escaping oil from the runaway well to a containment ship, but also be outfitted with a containment drum, so that oil collection would not be completely interrupted if a hurricane forced the ship to leave the area." This is a great idea! Redirect the oil into a ship, and prevent the loss of the oil. Also, it was smart they took into account weather problems. As storm season is arriving it was wise of them to do so.
Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because I do not read the news, and i learned a lot of things from your post.
