haiti? Earthquake? Wow!
Recently in english, we have been studying the earthquake in haiti. At first I thought that Haiti already had a robust government. I also had not realized all the negative influences/history that has helped to ruin this country. When I started watching videos on democracy now, thats when I realized that haiti has been raped and pillaged for its resources and I quote from one of the videos "has been used like a plantation". I know that many people feel that america has nothing to do with this and that they are just helping out and on top of that, they are the good guys in this. The truth is that they aren't, they are the ones that invaded the country, overthrew the government. On top of all of this, barack obama and bush and those guys are only giving money and trying to help out to show that they are interested in the country. I will quote from one of the videos again" its powerball money".
One thing that I know for sure about Is how much the country needs help. Now i have studied my share of the human anatomy since I want to pursue a career in the medical field. This is why I feel that we should be doing Alot more for them, these people down there are starving, dying etc. They need dire help and I just do not think supplies are being sent in fast enough. As a matter of fact, there is supposed to be this hospital ship that is helping out with the aid. I dont even think it got there yet. Haiti is in trouble, people are dying every minute. They are saying to be more specific that there is a lack of pain medication and people are dying from infection. This basically means that they do not have even the basic nescessities to help these people out and that is a big problem. Personally it is funny to me how we react to every other country fast enough but for this country, its taking so much time. I think its for a bigger reason then infrastructure.
I did some research on the haitian earthquake. I came across this one article: http://www.democracynow.org/2010/1/21/earthquake_frees_haitian_prisoners_from_port
This article provided a lot of information and opinions on the haitian earthquake. To be more specific, it discussed the amount of prisoners that were in the haitian jail and how many of them were not convicted of anything. That does not make any sense, why would you put someone in jail if they haven't committed any sort of crime? I feel that the government is phlegmatic and listless. I do not know the name of the president in power but I realized he is not living up to basic standards as an authoratative figure. I think that America is going to give haiti a whole new type of government because they dont have the key elements for a government. Secretary of defense, agriculture, etc etc. They have nothing. Something will be done.
In another source that I looked at http://www.democracynow.org/2010/1/19/doctor_misinformation_and_racism_have_frozen. There was this one statement that made me shake my head in disagreement with the writer. It was "I think at the bottom of the issue, racism has slowed the recovery efforts of this hospital. Security issues over the last forty-eight hours have been our—quote “security issues” over the last forty-eight hours have been our leading concern". This is so untrue because how could anybody be racist in this time? That does not make any sense, our fellow humans are dying and suffering, i think this is pure slander. You cannot insert racist into this whole equation.
All of this makes me think that Haiti will do better in the long run. I mean right now there is alot of work ahead but I know they will make it. There is a bit phillosophy in the sense that you can ask one question. Was this earthquake brought on by fate or was this onslaught randomized? It is a very interesting thing to think about considering all of haiti's history. What do you think?
