How Does Music Reflect One's Personality?

Discussion

How does music reflect one's personality? We all know that music is influential, but which genres are certain temperaments more likely to gravitate toward?

From the studies, one can gather that their is a link between musical taste and an individuals personality. Heavy metal fans are gentle, indie music listeners lack self-esteem lovers of pop music are uncreative, and hip hop listeners have high self esteem and are very outgoing.

The reason people think music is such a significant link to personalities, is that people accurately define themselves through music. A key reason that people become so defensive of what they listen to is found on their outlook of life. When you talk negatively about ones music taste you are inadvertently deriding them. Lots of people blatantly talk about how they hate this band or love this one and it can really feel like a personal attack. I know i can get offended if some one talks bad about my favorite band.We are drawn to certain genres because we can relate to them on a personal level.

A study has been done called "The Do Re Mi's Of Every Day Life" by Peter Rentfrow and and Sam Gosling. They came us with four music category's: Reflexive and Complex is Classical/folk/jazz, Energetic and Rhythmic is hiphop/dance, Upbeat and Conventional that is Religious/country/pop, and Intense and Rebellious is heavy metal/rock/alternative. The study shows how these music groups really do relate to people's personalities. They found that people who fell into the same categories had similar personality traits. Energetic and Rhythmic people can be very confident, liberal-minded, athletic, and can feel attractive. Upbeat and Conventional people are trusting, hardworking, helpful, and are politically conservative. Reflexive and Complex people can be open minded, politically liberal, creative, intelligent, and tolerant. Intense and Rebellious people tend to be athletic, rebellious, adventurous, intelligent, and inquisitive.

Music can really reflect personality and reflect who people are. Music is very influential in who a person is. Studies show that people with certain personality traits tend to gravitate towards the same music genre.

I really liked when you said that "Music can really reflect personality and reflect who people are." It is so true. Music really does have a big impact on people, including me. You are right about your personally being reflected by the music you listen to. You are an excellent writer!

Given that mood states are closely related to our personality (in fact,
personality is to climate what mood is to weather), and given that
people use music for emotional regulation, a scientific understanding of musical preferences should provide the perfect window into a person's soul.

Ask laypeople to provide an informal profile of someone based on their
favorite playlist and they will probably be as accurate as the best
psychometric test. As a matter of fact, most people do this already. When we first visit someone's home we make instant judgment of that
person's personality based on his or her DVD and CD collection, and books. These judgments are really quite accurate.

Most of the people like music, and someone said that good music is the
spiritual food for the person who adores it. Music is very important and
always be the best choice for any people with a good taste for music. People use music for emotional regulation. A scientific understanding of musical preferences should provide the perfect window into a person's mind. As a matter of fact, most people make instant judgment of that

I totally agree that what type of music you enjoy listening to reflects your personality. I have noticed that people with the same mannerisms and personality type as another person will typically enjoy listening to the same type of music. Also the types of music they tend to lean toward will often reflect their personal backround as well as their personality. People who like listening to more than one genre of music are also usually more than one personality type as well. Overall, I think that these studies are very interesting.

I agree, the music you listen

I agree, the music you listen to is afftected by your personality. Music is something you listen to not only for the enterainment, but eople also relate to music. Why would people listen to something that they can't understand? IF you don't relate to the lyrics, they don't mean anything. I think what causes people to listen to music more often is that they are able to see through the artists eyes because they know how they feel. In school, when you hear your classmates favorite somgs, you can kind of tell what they're like. For example, if someone listens to punk rock they're probably going to be a bit rebellious (as you said) because the music involves all those feelings. The music you listen to usually has bits and pieces of your personality mixed in. That's why you listen to it. You hear the music and see how similar it is to how you act and want to hear more like it. The bits and peices of you that are found in different songs make up your personality. The music you listen to will probably say more about you than you ever tell people.
