Innocent people suffering in Haiti

I just read a Wikipedia article, "2010 Haiti Earthquake"

Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia

.12 January 2010

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_Haiti_earthquake

. I was really moved by this article because the tragedy that has occurred in Haiti recently is devastatingly sad and hurts to read about or see pictures of people in the street dead or crying or just to think about it.

One sentence from this article that stands out for me is "The country is no stranger to natural disasters: it has been struck by multiple hurricanes, causing flooding and widespread damage, most recently in 2008 from

Tropical Storm Fay

and Hurricanes

Gustav

,

Hanna

and

Ike

, resulting in 800 deaths." I think this is unexceptionably sad because as if the country hadnt already been through many other catastrophes they had to endure this earthquake which really pushed them back farther when they were on the road to recovery. They hadnt rebuilded everything fully but it was better than the way they are now and now they're lower than ground zero. It hurts to see that these people are still looking for the starting line and have not even come close to entering the race for a new life.

Im pretty sure this is accurate because this topic has been very popular this past week and the casualties might not be too accurate but that would only be bcecause its too soon to tell how many are injured and how many are dead not to mention the fact that its has been extremely hard to get any sort of contact with anyone that lives in Haiti.

Another sentence that I was moved by was "The main

prison in Port-au-Prince collapsed during the earthquake. Many prisoners escaped into the streets, and their whereabouts are unknown." As if the injuries and death toll isnt enough this country also has to deal with prisoners on the lamb.

What I learned from this article was how to appreciate the things I have and not to take it for granted because the things I throw out here can be things people die for somewhere else, which is clearly the situation in Haiti. I live somewhere where Im blessed to have opportunites to excel in life and push forward for a successful future and in other places the only future people are thinking about is hours ahead and where they're going to sleep and how they're going to feed themselves and their family. Im blessed to say the least and I understand that I cannot take my life for granted because I honestly never know when something bad might happen god forbid.
