Johnny got his Gun
I have been reading excerpts from Dalton Trumbo's Johnny Got His Gun. It is about a fictional soldier who was struck by a mortar round in World War 1, and is left with no limbs, and no face, thus limiting interatctions to morse code created by hitting his head against the pillow. I found this book especially sad during the part where Joe Bonham (the protagonist) is crying out mentally for his mother, pleading for her to wake him up from this nightmare that he cannot free himself from. I think this book can be connected to Metallica's song "One," because the song is based off of the book. The lyrics of the song are from the point of view of a soldier hit by a landmine that has taken his "sight, taken [his] speech, taking [his] hearing, taken [his] arms, taken [his] legs, taken [his] soul, left [him] with a life in hell."
