Joining Hands with Drew Berrymore for a Brighter Future
We all know and love Drew Berrymore, her stunning smile and career in Hollywood, but many of us have never taken a close look at what she does to help better the future of our world. Berrymore became an Ambassador Against Hunger for World Food Programme (WFP) in 2007. She has made many trips to Africa since. Upon being named the ambassador, she said,
“I cant think of any issue that is more important than working to see that no schoolchild in this world goes hungry.”
Berrymore truly shows that making sure every person has eaten everyday is close to her heart. Right now at our current world population, we have troubles supplying every child with a meal, despite thousands of people and millions of dollars. Our population is expected to be 9 billion by 2050. This means in the next 48 years, there will be one-third more people among us. That is not a long time, and we are fighting as it is to feed everyone here. Finding enough resources and food for everyone is a struggle we must fix now. If we can no longer feed the people that house or world today, how can we expect to fill our children’s stomachs?
Current agriculturalists are striving to find new sciences to solve this problem. One advancement includes hydroponics. Hydroponics is the process of growing plants without the use of soil. Hydroponics can be done locally inside and out. Almost anything can be grown hydroponically, including tomatoes, basil, and even pumpkins. Seeds are places into a solid substance and placed into the system. Water with nutrients is passed through the solid, nurturing the plants. When harvest time comes you simply take the entire piece out of the system, and harvest. The Windsor High School Agriscience program has instituted hydroponics into their curriculum.
“Hydroponics has a bright future, and we want our students to be involved in it.” said Melinda Spaur, the Botany teacher. They currently have a class all about plants and focusing in on hydroponics. The classroom has a "mini camp" hydroponics system that the student take care of.
We must all join hands and hearts and get behind Drew Berrymore and the science of hydroponics to create a brighter future for our world, where hunger is always absent. We can solve our problems with world hunger and calm our fears about the future.
