Living in a democratic country
Living in the United States for 18 years and seeing how many countries out there in the world have no rights or voices has made me proud of myself and my parents for coming here for a better life and future. The meaning of living in a democratic society is to have a place where everyone has some type of freedom and voice and where things are more your choice rather than the government making choices for society.
Some values I believe that are associated with democracy are, people having the right to have a voice, both men and women. Also, when it comes to laws it seems pretty fair and approval. Values like this have motivated me to get involved with helping others like the 9th graders in my school. It gives me an opportunity to hear what they think and have to say related to everyday things.
However, opportunities like this have made me want to participate in activities like the Aids walk or donating blood for those in need of it. Going to my parent’s native country and seeing how the health service is not as good as in the United States and meeting people that are poor and cant afford to pay there medication. It makes me feel proud that am helping people out there in the world by doing activities like this with my school or by myself with the help of my parents or friends.
I remember the first time I went to the cancer walk with my school as a group in orchard beach. There were so many people but the location for a walk on the beach was pretty nice and welcoming. That day I had donated $5 dollars really wishing I could have donated more but it was all I had also it was better than nothing. As the walk was about to start I see and hear this lady with her husband telling him how proud she was for being there that moment and surviving the chemo she had gone through. The walk had started and she started cheering like every one else. At that point I started thinking to myself that even one dollar can help cancer patients and how grateful this lady is for being hear and how there’s people in this world that don’t appreciate the gift of life.
I feel years go by fast with in a blink of an eye and there are always millions of people dying of not only cancer but of many other diseases that still have no cure for them. I have seen patients in hospitals that are lying in bed just waiting until they die because there is no other method to help them. Seeing these moments of life have made me think differently of the world and the people that surrounds me. As am growing up and seeing the reality of life I would like to one day share this story and thought to the rest of the world out there. I feel examples like these will really change peoples attitude and thought within life.
