My research question is what was the historical significance of Machu Picchu.
Searching articles through EBSCO I found the article, http://web.b.ebscohost.com/ehost/detail/detail?sid=5c435816-4e3b-4a7e-94..., which talked about the early theories of the purpose of Machu Picchu, for example Hiram Binghaam III was convinced that it was the birthplace and final stronghold of the Incas, where virgins sought sanctuary and priests worshipped the sun god. It also discusses what facts have been discovered, they found that Machu Picchu was heavily populated by craftsmen, probably brought there by the royals to tend to their material needs. Facial studies of recovered skulls revealed a healthy stew of ethnic groups, pointing to a multicultural mix of servants as opposed to a uniform class of priests. They also discovered that the ratio of females to males was pretty even being 3 to 2 and that families and even infants lived and worked on-site.
