Most Interesting Fact of My Research

 The most interesting fact that I have learned thus far in my research is that rap/hip hop began as a musical expression of the african american lower-class that was a social commentary on issues that did not get a lot of media attention. I had no idea that the purpose of this genre of music was originally to address social injustices that the black residents of the Bronx, NY, were dealing with in their everyday lives. Today much of rap is about violence, sex, drugs, and promoting oneself. Rappers sing about women, guns, cars, drugs, and murder. This is so much different than what the original rappers composed their lyrics about. Today this type of music is often seen as one that causes violence and there are feuds between many mainstream rappers in our society today. When rap started in the early 1970's, it was a music that brought people together and helped to relieve the stress of everyday life. It was an outlet of many to share their thoughts with the world.
