Most Significant Event

To me, one of the most significant events that occurred during the last couple of years was the oil spill in the gulf of Mexico. It happened during the spring of 2010. An oil pipe in the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico burst, and after that, five million barrels of oil poured into the Gulf of Mexico. Of course, it was a huge loss for the oil companies, but it had a devastating effect on the ocean animals. The water they live in quickly became contaminated and over 600 sea turtles died as a result of the catastrophe. For me, this was when I realized how fragile the environment is and what a huge impact humans have on it. It served as a wake up call for me and caused me to be more environmentally aware. Today, two year later, the ocean is still suffering the consequences of the oil spill, after many efforts have been made to clean up the mess.
