Moving to Harlem

In Chapter 10 of "Down These Mean Streets, Piri and his family moves to Long Island. He has a very hard time adjusting.When he attends he founds out that he is surrounded by racist people. He vows to never to go back again. Disgusted by his new peers, he moves back to Harlem to see his friends.

I am not surprised by Piri's actions. Adolesnces tend to disobey their parents because they now have to make many life choices and start to think they're grown. An example of what I mean is on Page 91, " No, moms, I cant get along with anything, no matter what I do. Nothing falls right. I dont like Long Island and los blancos, and this world full of shits. " I think Piri felt out of place because during his little bit of time in Long Island everywhere he went he experienced a racist encounter. As a defense mechianism, he broke down and ran back to where he knew he had a place in society.

So far the plot in "Down These Mean Streets" reminds me of something that I also experienced in my life. For me, in August 2010 I had to live the Bronx and move to Harlem. This was a hard time in my life, I had to adjust to new traveling routes as well as a new neighborhood. When this happen it took me a year to be comfortable enough with my neighborhood to make friends. In the summer of 2011, I had spent my whole summer in Harlem. I dont think movings so bad anyhow, its a new life in a new area.

I am looking forward to reading the rest of my book because while reading this book I feel myself so in tuned with the main character. I feel like as if were bestfriends and I was there the whole time because this book's setting is in Spanish Harlem which is where I reside.
