Up North is the new black...
Since the 19 th century immigrants have rushed to America coming by the boat load. Many of them coming to further there careers and careers, but the majority fled in search of a new life. There was a common notion among immigrants that if you came to America you will be better off and you will be granted prosperity. When referring to the book, Richard often expressed his desire to travel north as if it would be the pinnacle of his happiness. Much like the immigrants, he is unaware of how disillusioned he is from what is reality. When the immigrants when coming over had to bare many hardships and endured much suffering. As for Richard, he is unaware that if he were to travel up north he would suffer from similar racism and prejudice he suffers in the south.
