Day 14 Occupy Wall Street September 30 2011 Shankbone 2.JPG

The Occupy Salt Lake protesters have been protesting for seventeen days straight (Occupy SLC). Although there has not been overwhelming support for the protesters, the Occupy Salt Lake cause has had limited opposition. There was a small conflict between the Occupy Salt Lake protesters that the Salt Lake City police department. The was talk that the city was not going to renew the occupation’s permit to maintain residence in the pioneer park, which would mean that the protesters would have to disband. The protesters have no intent to disband anytime soon and if their permit was not renewed they plan to stay, as an act of civil disobedience. Luckily the permit was renewed. None of the Occupy Salt Lake protesters have been arrested for their choice to protest. However, this cannot be said for protesters around the world.

There have been many violent classes in Greece and in other places throughout the world. One place were there was surprisingly large amount of violence and clashes between police and protesters, is New York. On September 24, there was 80 people arrested in one day.  There are many video’s of police brutality and arrest for various reasons. More recently Mayor Bloomberg canceled his plans to have a forced clearing of Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park. This was due to the fact that when word got out of the polices’ plans, there was actually a surge in the number of protesters. This is admirable especially, because these protesters were specifically staying in the park to get arrested for what they believe in.

Dear Elisabeth,

I enjoyed reading your post, "Occupation Opposition" because I'm currently learning about this current event happening world wide in many cities and you made me understand how America can be unfair based on the arrest due to protesting.

One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is "Although there has not been overwhelming support for the protesters, the Occupy Salt Lake cause has had limited opposition." I think this is wrong because people shouldn't have limited opposition. Everyone is equal and everyone has a voice to speak up with.

Another sentence that I disliked was: "This is admirable especially, because these protesters were specifically staying in the park to get arrested for what they believe in." This stood out for me because they "specifically" did not tend to get arrested.

I don't agree with you that  they "specifically" intended to get arrested. One reason I say this is because people were there to speak up for what they believe in and to be heard. Another reason I disagree with you is because a lot of people went to there and they thought of risking their jobs. A lot of people didn't think it be that horrible they knew they was headed for speaking up for their rights.

Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because its interesting to read of what's going around in other cities and not only in NYC.

Elisabeth-
This post is great, I haven't heard much about the Occupy Salt Lake movement. I think the news has been minimizing coverage on such protests in our own city in favor of the bigger more important protests in places like New York. Your post helped me to learn about the local occupy wall street movement in my own city.
Thanks! Alex
