Origins of Basketball

Where did  basketball originate from, whats the history of it, and who started this sport in the first place? Basketball is not an evolution of an ancient game or another sport, but one that was invented. A man by the name of Dr. James Naismith is very well respected for succeeding in creating a new game that many still enjoy today. Naismith was asked to create an athletic, indoor game for his students at his YMCA Training School, in 1891, where he worked as a physical education teacher. He recalled a game he played at childhood called “duck-on-a-rock”. The concept of that game was to try to knock over a “duck” off a rock with another rock. Naismith came up with 13 rules that eventually originated into the all time, loved sport that many of us enjoy today. The first time the game was played, was with two soccer balls and a peach basket nailed up 10 feet high on a court that was much smaller than our usual court today. Originally the peach basket’s bottom stayed intact and no dribbling or bouncing of the balls were thought of yet. Eventually the game of basketball came to be what it is now thanks to the wonderful Dr. James Naismith.

This is pretty interesting.  I have always wondered where basketball originated from.  This makes me wonder about the origins of football, baseball, etc.  It's cool to see the evolution of the game as the years have gone by, going from peach baskets to lavish, multi-million dollar stadiums.

Andrewa, I completely agree

Andrewa,

I completely agree with you. its interesting to see the origination of a sport that is so lively and played all around the world. I might actually go into more detail with the other sports because i don't know much about their originations either. But I'm glad you found this interesting because i love basketball and I was pretty sure that there were other people out there that love it but don't know the origins; so, here it is. =)

Nice Post

Dear Ronika:

I feel that you did a good job on the post “Origins of Basketball”, because from what I read you did your research and didn't have any bad grammar. One sentence that stood out to me was “Basketball is not an evolution of an ancient game or another sport, but one that was invented”. I think this is interesting because I always thought it evolved from another game and didn't know this was invented.

Another sentence that I felt was interesting was “ The first time the game was played, was with two soccer balls and a peach basket nailed up 10 feet high on a court that was much smaller than our usual court today”. This also stood out to me because i would of never thought basketball would of been played with two soccer balls and a peach basket.

Your post remind me of a post I read when I was in 8th grade I cant remember the books name at the moment but the book was also very interesting. The book and this post is similar because both of you talk about how basketball started and how it was originally played.

Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because you are a good writer with very little errors. Also because you seem to do a lot of research on whatever topic you are writing about.
