Osama Bin Laden's Death

In my opinion, the most significant event to occur in the past few years was the death of Osama Bin Laden. Almost exactly a year ago, President Obama ordered a strike force of 20 odd Navy Seals, transported in two Black Hawk helicopters and two Chinook helicopters,to attack a compound just over the Pakistan/Afghan border on the Pakistan side. For 8 months, the compound had been under surveillance and it was discovered that Osama Bin Laden was living there. The Navy Seals took the compound by force quickly wounding two women and killing several men closely related to or employed by Bin Laden. They also killed Bin Laden with two bullets. His body was respectfully dumped in the ocean and the compound was searched for information.
This was an incredibly important event because Osama Bin Laden was the head of Al Qaeda. He was one of the few men who had successfully evaded the United States for many years. He was responsible for countless terrorist attacks and yet he had never been brought to justice. Finally on that day he was. In addition to a tremendous psychological relief, Bin Laden's death crippled Al Qaeda and the fact that he did not have an escape plan, along with the intelligence found in the building showed that what was once a powerful organization was truly on its last legs. With Osama gone there seems to have been very little Al Qaeda activity which was something the world feared constantly for more than a decade.

Seamus, I will agree with you that Osama Bin Laden's death was the most important event from the last couple of years. I recently watched a show about the day it all happened and how President Obama had to attend the Correspondents dinner that night. Jimmy Fallon was making Bin Laden jokes that night but Obama kept a pretty good poker face.
What do you think was the significance of his death? Sometimes I wonder about how much it actually matters that we killed him. I think it was important in making American people feel safe, but how much safer are we actually? Someone else can just step in and take his place.
I also read an article about the importance Bin Laden played in running Al Qaeda. Many believed that Bin Laden was merely the face of the terrorist group, but had no actual control. But new information shows that he was very much in control and the terrorist group is a lot more organized than many have thought.
