Little games like minesweeper, solitaire, and hearts can consume a person for hours.  Starting one game can lead to five ten maybe even twenty games in a row and there goes one hour.  Then there are more options and other games to play.  Of course you also have to play till you win as well so that could take an extra thirty minutes or so depending on your luck.  Computer games are the easiest ways to procrastinate and avoid anything that has to be done.  Along with being a good way to avoid they are fun.
Games are not necessarily a bad thing, as long as the work is completed in the end, on time.  Every once in a while it can be nice to take a break from work to play a game.  A good way to relax and clear your head before refocusing and getting back to work.  The hard part is stopping the game.
Now on the computer there are those games that are on every computer such as the ones mentioned before along with free cell and spider solitaire.  But those are not even the most time consuming games.  Their are games like world of war craft or the Sims that can take hours.  The bigger the game and the more complex the harder it is to stop playing.  They are the perfect past time as well since all you have to do is find a computer.

almost anything can be called an addiction if it routinely interrupts life's basic components, including school, work and relationships, he said. The important thing is balance. So align your chakras -- and remember, it's just a game.

Their are many games out there that can take up hours and hours of a persons time.  The key to not letting them rule your world is to step outside every once in a while, even if it is to play another game.
