Puppies and Kitties
This summer I worked at the Utah Humane Society. While working there, I have reflected on many moral issues, including animal cruelty, animal abandonment, and people who horde animals. While working, I kept wondering why we find the need to have pets in the first place? I can understand with like a dog, how they make a loving companion, and they will always love you. But why cats, fish, hamsters, bunnies etc? Aren't these creatures usually eaten? Its like playing with your food... Of course I do not believe that these animals should be eaten, in fact I am very supportive of animal rights, its just that sometimes I wonder about the original purpose of these small animals. Do humans need something smaller and defenseless in their lives? What about animal horders? Whats the deal with them? Sometimes when I see people coming in to find a puppy, I wonder if they just want that cute and defenseless factor. I feel like going up to them and reminding them that this puppy is going to grow up, and become a not as cute dog, do you still want it? It makes me sick when I see people adopting pets as show items, or as a fad. Its not a cute factor people, its a responsibility! So that brings me back to my original question, Do we have pets because they are "cute" or do we have them as companions?
