Reactions to 1984
George Orwell's novel 1984 made me think if the government were to take control, what the worst case scenario would be. This fictional dystopian society, Airstrip One, was home to citizens of a dull, boring, life. You are constantly being watched and monitored. There is limited freedom with Big Brother in control. Winston was the only hope to change this. With the help of Julia I believed the two would change lives. All Winston was paranoid about eventually came true. Unfortunately O'Brien was undercover the whole time, part of the inner party that eventually convicted Winston and Julia. This depressing ending left me questioning O'Brien and feeling sorry for Winston and Julia. I'm disappointed in the ending, it is sad and unsettling. I believe that Orwell was right about some things in the future, like the influence technology will have on our lives. I also think that he was wrong about certain things like the way governments will turn to dictatorships to gain total control of populations.
