Rio to Host 2016 Olympic Games

Just today Rio de Janeiro was voted by the International Voting Committee to host the 2016 Olympics over Madrid, Tokyo, and Chicago. Voting is conducted in two rounds and the Windy City was eliminated in the first. The 2016 Olympics would have been a great addition to the United States history in the Olympics. My question is why Rio? What advantages does it have over the other four cities? I think none. Rio might have such a large population, a little over 7 million, but it also has a soaring crime rate which poses a threat not only to its general population, but to the athletes that will be traveling there in 2016. The city itself is an old urban community right on the beach of east Brazil. In my opinion the Committee should have selected a safer, smaller city that could accommodate the large hoards of people that will be attending the games.

Rio spoke to IOC members' consciences: The city argued that it was simply unfair that South America has never hosted the Games, while Europe, Asia and North America have done so repeatedly

Dear Blake:

I enjoyed your post, "Rio to host 2016 Olympic Games," because I totally agree with your post. Why not Chicago? Seems like a better city to me then Madrid, Tokyo, or Rio.

One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: "In my opinion the Committee should have selected a safer, smaller city that could accommodate the large hoards of people that will be attending the games. " I think this is right on because this is what the Olympic commitee should have done.

Your post reminds me of what I watched on T.V last night. I was watching the Colbert Report, and he talked about how the Olympics should be hosted in Chicago. In a very comical routine, Colbert and a native Chicagoan took turns dissing Rio, Tokyo, and Madrid. As funny as these "burns" were they made sense, and supported the American spirit.

Thanks for your work on this. I look forward to seeing what you create next, because your atricals are relevant and interesting.

Blake-One thing I found

Blake-
One thing I found interesting about the IOC's choice of Rio for the 2016 olympics was the Japanese committee's response to this choice. Tokyo's governor, Shintaro Ishihara, made some very bold, apocalyptic statements regarding golbal warming, perhaps substituting shock value for truth in his support of a Japan olympics in 2016:

"I think this (the 2016 Games) could be the last for mankind, however, more realistically we have to come up with measures without which the Olympics cannot last long. Tokyo is prepared to do everything to create the best conditions for the athletes environmentally speaking. But if things are left unattended the Olympic Games will not continue for long. I want people to make choices with consideration for the environment. Global warming is getting worse. Scientists have said that the earth has passed the point of no return."

-Shintaro Ishihara, Governor of Tokyo
