Rosa Strygler's Visit to East-West

After weeks of impatiently waiting for her visit, Rosa finally came to East-West and the presentation was better than I expected. Coming into the room, her presence seemed great. Who wouldn’t be excited at seeing an author in school and not just any author, a Holocaust survivor? The event took place in, the art teacher, Mr. Marini’s room. The audience was the whole 12th grade class in East-West. Since the book Rosa was introduced to our class, it felt great to learn and know about her life and experiences in the concentration camps during the Holocaust. The presenting speakers were Rosa and the person who has been working with her for the past 20 years, I forgot her name.

“I still grieve very so much on my son and sometimes memories of the Holocaust do come back. It never goes away.”

Hearing this quote just made me realize that people around the world need to learn how to be together or united. For example, a sense of togetherness usually occurs when a disaster happens such as the one in Japan. Now, everyone around the world is donating and helping out Japan, with its problems. To me, this quote meant a lot because it is from a primary source. When Rosa spoke about this delicate topic, it made me feel her pain and allowed me ot understand her better.

Another quote that stuck out for me from Rosa’s amazing visit was from herself:

“My mother just wanted to die, she gave up after my father and two brothers were sent to the gas chamber. We had to line up on roll call and if you were not there, you were killed. My mother just decided that she wanted to die and so the next day, she was not there.”

Hearing this quote again, I see how important family is and how tragic it is to know that a mother leaves your side after losing all hope. It opens my eyes because this quote is saying that life is precious and we must enjoy it to the fullest. The Holocaust killed many people and Rosa is here to tell hers on how it took away all her family. Now keeping this in mind, isn’t family and life very important?

Another quote that surprised me was something that Rosa had said. This surprised me because I never thought about the things Rosa said in her perspective. It is great to know that she feels that our mission is education and preventing something like the Holocaust from repeating itself. It really shows care and dedication:

“I think that everyone in this room should prevent something like the Holocaust to occur, again. You can only do this through education. Look at what is happening in Libya, the man is killing people because they want freedom.”

Before hearing this advice, I never thought that every individual in the room had the power to become a leader and implement the greatness of world peace amongst humans. While Rosa was speaking, I felt really connected to her because while reading the book, there was a lot of emotion in it. In other words, when I was reading the book, it was as if I was inside the scenery experiencing the same pain as Rosa. I admire Rosa for her strength against all odds and surviving through many events that a regular person wouldn’t.

Dear Christian,
I enjoyed reading your post, “ Rosa Strygler’s Visit to East-West”. Reading this post I got to see that you were very interested in what Rosa had to say. I think that made really good relations to everything that Rosa said. I agree with you in many things that you mentioned.
Something that stood out for me was: “... I see how important family is and how tragic it is to know that a mother leaves your side after losing all hope. It opens my eyes because this quote is saying that life is precious and we must enjoy it to the fullest.” I think that it must of have been very painful for Rosa to see that her whole family was dying but her mother died right in front of her which was worst. When Rosa answered this question, it seem as if she was trying to understand her mother and why she lost her will to live. By reading the book, I think that Rosa was right and her mother lost hope and after seeing that everyone she loved died.
Another sentence that stood out for me was: “Before hearing this advice, I never thought that every individual in the room had the power to become a leader and implement the greatness of world peace amongst humans. While Rosa was speaking, I felt really connected to her because while reading the book, there was a lot of emotion in it.” I agree with you on this. Once Rosa explained the reason to why she wanted to let students know what happened to her, I understood that she wanted to prevent something like the Holocaust from happening again. I think that she inspired me to be someone that works for peace and bring something good to the world. The book definitely had emotion but I think that by talking to her in person felt better because we actually got to see who was speaking and her reaction to different questions.
I really liked the ideas you got from this interview with Rosa. It was nice to know that you admire Rosa. I think that you have very interesting thoughts about everything that Rosa said.

 Dear Deysi:

I appreciated your comment, "Dear Christian, I enjoyed," because I am glad that you think my views on Rosa and who she is are great. I believe that surviving something like Rosa did is very special and shows a great deal of emotional strength. This event really meant a lot to me.

One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: "I think that it must of have been very painful for Rosa to see that her whole family was dying but her mother died right in front of her which was worst. When Rosa answered this question, it seem as if she was trying to understand her mother and why she lost her will to live." I think this is true because going through something like this is devastating. I don’t know how it feels to lose a mother, but I do believe that it must have been an immense pain for Rosa.

Another sentence that I enjoyed  was: "Once Rosa explained the reason to why she wanted to let students know what happened to her, I understood that she wanted to prevent something like the Holocaust from happening again. I think that she inspired me to be someone that works for peace and bring something good to the world." This stood out for me because I liked the impact that Rosa’s speech had on you. It is important to help fix our planet and a lot of people do not care or want to understand how important it is. Helping the planet is saving lives and stopping corruption from destroying the planet.

Your comment reminds me of something that happened recently. Japan has just experience a nuclear crisis and it’s still going on. Many people have died and others have been left homeless or family-less. I think that this situation goes back to what Rosa explained in her speech, that we must stop the Holocaust from occurring again. I do believe that by Rosa comparing the Holocaust to Lybia, it is safe to say that she wants every human to have their rights. What I do strongly believe is that humans such as us, should have the right to enjoy our planet. Events like the nuclear crisis Japan is going through right now, shows a great deal of stubbornness on almost every human’s behalf. If people were to just start using environmental friendly light sources, then maybe this crisis could have been avoided. Maybe Japan’s issue will trigger a different mindset on humans and our beloved Earth.

Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because it is great to know that you learned something from Rosa. Rosa was amazing and I wish I could see her again, it was fascinating to meet her in person. By reading the book Rosa, I felt connected to her even before Rosa came to our school. This was a wonderful experience.

Dear CFlores,

I liked your post, "Rosa Strygler's Visit to East West", because it was really nice that Rosa came to our school to talk to us. It was really nice for her to answer our questions. She is a Holocaust survivor and the memories she had from that incident still brings back fear and terrifying moments. She doesn't want the Holocaust to happen again and she wants everyone to know about it.

One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: "I see how important family is and how tragic it is to know that a mother leaves your side after losing all hope. It opens my eyes because this quote is saying that life is precious and we must enjoy it to the fullest. The Holocaust killed many people and Rosa is here to tell hers on how it took away all her family. Now keeping this in mind, isn’t family and life very important?" I think this is important because family to me is really important. Without your family you would really be nothing. Your family is there to take care of you. Some people don't really care about their family and they tend to regret in the future.

Another sentence that I liked was: "In other words, when I was reading the book, it was as if I was inside the scenery experiencing the same pain as Rosa. I admire Rosa for her strength against all odds and surviving through many events that a regular person wouldn’t." This stood out for me because I can't believe Rosa is such a strong person after she went through all this. She was a really brave person and her father told her that she was going to survive. She believed in her father and today now she is living her life.

Your post reminds me of something that happened to me. One time I remember when my friend didn't really care much about life so I tried to change his mind. He wouldn't listen to me so I kept on trying. I didn't want him to give up on life because everyone only has one chance to live life.

Thanks for writing. I look forward to seeing what you next because your posts are really interesting to me and I believe that Rosa coming here change change how we look life in our perspective.

 Dear CFlores,

I enjoyed reading your post, Rosa Strygler's Visit to East-West. Our grade had a very interesting encounter with this woman, a Holocaust survivor, as well as a survivor of many tragic events. Rosa Strygler's visit, as I remember it, brought me many things to think about, and your post brought my back to this pleasant event we had with this woman.

One sentence that stood out for me was, "I still grieve very so much on my son and sometimes memories of the Holocaust do come back. It never goes away.” From reading the book and listening to what she had to say to us, I know that what she said was true. She went through many things, but there will always be memories that will haunt her throughout her life. Not many people would be able to withstand the amounts of damage she's dealt with, and I remember her saying this, or something similar to it.

Another sentence I found interesting is, “My mother just wanted to die, she gave up after my father and two brothers were sent to the gas chamber. We had to line up on roll call and if you were not there, you were killed. My mother just decided that she wanted to die and so the next day, she was not there.” When I read about these incidents in the book, I felt quite sad. How does it feel to see a loved one dying? Or someone just disappearing, without you knowing what actually happened to them? The cruel actions of the Nazis back in World War II, when looked at in depth, is to me, the most terrible thing anyone can do. Rosa's memories brought us back to these times, not actually witnessing, but being able to read about it.

Thank you for putting up this post, it was a good read, and I can write back to you easily. I look forward to more of your writing, they are interesting and not boring to read like some posts on YouthVoices.

Dear CFlores,

I enjoyed your post "Rosas visit" beacause it is apperent you put alotof effort into writing this. I can see you carefully choose yor wording in order to put your thoughts across clearly. I also enjoyed your engagment in Rosas Coming to the school it shows motivation and inqusitiveness which are excellent qualities for a post.

One sentence you Wrote that stands out for me is "Since the book Rosa was introduced to our class, it felt great to learn and know about her life and experiences in the concentration camps during the Holocaust." I think this is captivating because not many students honestly have the patience to sit a room for hours and listen to one person speak, with enjoyment. She was so well spoken she was worth the time time. her story was so enchanting i couldnt resist but to listen.

Another sentence that I understood was "Before hearing this advice, I never thought that every individual in the room had the power to become a leader and implement the greatness of world peace amongst humans. " This stood out for me because i felt the same way how could this little women who was even smaller then me have such an everlasting impact on people.

Your post reminds me of something that happened to me. One time i was in a class where the focus topic of the week was the holocaust we had to write a paper about how we would feel what would we do and how it impacts us today. In this post i see you have answered that and much more. You have given insightfull and heartfelt infortmation that is very revellent to the youth of our generation.

Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because as an A student you have truelly been top of the line with your post and opinions. I also admire the effort and time you put into the post by captivationg readers and adding imagies. Bravo Cflores nice post.

Dear Christian

I enjoyed reading your post about rosa's visit to our school because it's great to see how other people remember the event. One thing that i noticed that you said was that "   I still grieve very so much on my son and sometimes memories of the Holocaust do come back. It never goes away" this was a very powerful thing to say because you realize that even after so many years she still lives with the horrible memories of what happened.

Another line that stood out to me was “My mother just wanted to die, she gave up after my father and two brothers were sent to the gas chamber. We had to line up on roll call and if you were not there, you were killed. My mother just decided that she wanted to die and so the next day, she was not there.” I think this line helps to describe how powerful she is, even after her family was killed in front of her, and her mother gave up on life, she still lived on

I enjoyed reading your post about her coming because it helped me to see it from a perspective other than my own

Dear Christian,

I enjoyed your post because Rosa was a very nice lady and her book "Rosa" was very interesting to read. Even though she went threw alot of situations i think she was very strong and brave to write everything on a book and let people enter her personal life.

In one of your paragraphs you state that "Before hearing this advice, I never thought that every individual in the room had the power to become a leader and implement the greatness of world peace amongst humans " To me this statement meant that anyone and everyone can do something to make a change because everyone has there own voice and can say something to make a change. Yet then again some people can't make a difference or a change no matter how much they fight for it because there's always going to be a issue that can't always be resolved.

Over all i agree with your post and enjoyed it alot. Though people go threw issues in life that can only make you stronger and braver for the future. Y ou have to take it more like a perparation istead of a problem and just face it how ever you can. Just like Rosa did no matter how hard things got she kept moving on because n the end nothing can get worse.

Wow

Dear Christian,

I thought that your post was very deep and had a lot of meaning. No doubt that Rosa went through a lot in her life. Rosa had to be very strong on both occassions to survive death and depression.

One quote that you wrote that I like is: "After weeks of impatiently waiting for her visit, Rosa finally came to East-West and the presentation was better than I expected. Coming into the room, her presence seemed great." I did not that you were very excited about Rosa coming to our school. Meeting an author from a book that they wrote is very interesting. She sounded very Jewsish. I wonder if he husband got use to it.

Another quote that you wrote that I like is: "I admire Rosa for her strength against all odds and surviving through many events that a regular person wouldn’t." This is true because it is an great task. I admire her for surviving something like this, too. Rosa has gone through a lot in her life, it keeps me wondering how she survived all of it.

Thank you for writing this post because its shows your personality. Your post is great and very personal, nice job.

Hello Christian,

I really liked reading your post. It's clear that you were
very excited for Ms. Strygler's visit. I really liked when you said:

"Hearing this quote again, I see how important family
is and how tragic it is to know that a mother leaves your side after losing all
hope. It opens my eyes because this quote is saying that life is precious and
we must enjoy it to the fullest. The Holocaust killed many people and Rosa is
here to tell hers on how it took away all her family."

Strygler did talk a lot about her family, both the one she
grew up with and the one she created with her husband. Her family meant so much
to her and reading about her experiences with her family really shows how close
she was with them and how much their deaths hurt her.

I also liked when you quoted Strygler.

I think that everyone in this room should prevent something
like the Holocaust to occur, again. You can only do this through education.
Look at what is happening in Libya, the man is killing people because they want
freedom.”

This stuck out to me as well. I was my favorite thing she
said. Strygler really wants us to make a difference and because we are all so
young, we have that ability more than almost anyone else.

Dear Christian: As I was

Dear Christian:

As I
was surfing through Youth Voices, I came upon your post “Rosa’s Visit to
East-West”. Those of us who were there during her visit were suppose to write
down a few quotes that we have our thoughts on, it’s interesting to look at the
different quotes people chose. Sometimes, I wonder why Rosa chose to come to
our school, surely it’s not money because (our school is poor) she is not that
type of person who would take that. Surely, she has been to other schools
before, but don’t you wonder what made her step foot on our school?

One
sentence you wrote that stands out to me is: “Hearing
this quote again, I see how important family is and how tragic it is to know
that a mother leaves your side after losing all hope.”
I feel some personal connection to that sentence. Once I
had a family, I was surrounded by the warmth of a family. I did not know
realize the warmth of a family until I lose it. I realized that it is when you
lose something, then you realize the existence of that thing.

Another sentence you wrote that stands
out to me is: “It is great to know that she feels that our mission is education and
preventing something like the Holocaust from repeating itself.”
Many of
us go to school because we are required to do so by law, which led us to forget
the real reasons we need education. Sometime I wonder to myself, “Why do we
need to be educated?” My parents say I have to be educated to live, to survive
in this world. My teachers said I need to be educated to understand what’s
going on around, to be aware of the rights I hold as an individual. I came up
with an answer of my own from what Rosa had said. I need to be educated make
this world a better place.
