Self-esteem bookmarking "Fight your fear"

I’m learning more about self-esteem right now, and in particular what I’m wondering about is: What is self-esteem? As I was reading through Google Reader, this blog post caught my attention because it explain how our self-esteem are form.
The quote I chose here is basically saying our experience during our childhood affect our self-esteem later on.
I think this is true on most people, if you think about your own childhood.
However, there’s something I don’t get. There are these out there who have dangerously high self-esteems, and from what I heard about their childhood condition, it doesn’t seem to fit the requirement for high self-esteem development. I wonder where they got their self-esteem from, and how their high self-esteem was form.
It is kind of unbelievable when you think about how the treatment you received at a young age will affect your attitude toward things so many years later, won’t you forget what happen by then? How is the short term childhood treatment going to affect the self-esteem of adult so many years after?
