We are exposed to numerous food additives; colors, flavors, vitamins. Some of them are harmful on their own, and some interact in the test tube that is your body.

The Toxicopathology Unit at the University of Liverpool conducted a test with four commonly used food additives: Brilliant Blue, L- Glutamic Acid, Aspartame, and Quinoline Yellow. Mouse NB2a Neuroblastoma cell were induced with mixtures of the additives and after twenty-four hours were examined for neurite growth inhibition.

The results of the test showed a significant interaction between the color Brillian Blue and the Flavor enhancer L-Glutamic Acid. Aspartame mixed with Quinoline Yellow also showed growth inhibition to the neurite.

The interactive effects of Aspartame and Quinoline Yellow were more apparant than the other mixtures. The test aslo revealed that the additives in a mixture are more harmful than the independent states.

"Over three decades ago, it was discovered that L-glutamic acid destroys dendrites and cell bodies of neurons in the developing brain, thus causing brain lesions (Olney, 1969"
