Text Messaging. This simple phrase is known world-wide. At first a cellular device was used in the case of an emergency, and came sometime after the trusty old beeper. Then the cell phones started to get more and more "technologically savvy". I remember having the big brick phones, that didn't even have cameras or games. These phones were strictly used for calling. Then they added camera's, games, calendars, and text messaging.
Text messaging is basically like an instant messaging service via mobile to mobile, mobile to computer, computer to mobile, etc. As texting got more and more popular, the new cellular devices came out especially for texting. The stats for texting are phenomenal.
"Today text messaging is the most widely used mobile data service, with 35% of all mobile phone users worldwide or 4.2 Million out of 7.3 Million phone subscribers at end of 2003 being active users of the Short Message Service."
Every cell phone company is constantly coming out with new types of text messaging phones. They consistently advertise how "new", "cool", "fast", "technological", and "useful" texting is. There's even research on text messaging done daily. They say texting is bad for the thumbs; apparently it gives carpal tunnel. Yet kids, teens, young adults, even old people are texting 24/7! Some text slow, some text so fast they can do an entire message of 160 characters in a matter of seconds. Here's a video on some research done:
