Voices on: bp and the oil spill

When i think about the bp oil spill i wonder why it happened and why it is taking so long to clean? BP seemed not to into cleaning up the mess as quickly as others wanted it to be cleaned. The people who died in the explosion is sad. Even though they stopped the leak, they still have a lot of oil that is spread through many rivers and seas in the south through the Americas.  Many animals died from this and it is also affecting our economy. The fish are being poisoned and sales are going up. People are getting sick from the fish. It doesn't affect me but it affects people and companies that use fish everyday.

I agree with Abraham Lustgarten’s essay “Furious growth and cost cuts led to BP accidents past and present” from “Pascal was assigned to BP in 1998, when the company’s Alaska division was setting a criminal case involving a contractor who illegally dumped hundreds of gallons of toxic waste back into a well hole. It was the company’s first federal felony...” because this shows that BP didn't care enough to follow the law or at least keep the safety of the environment and their workers.This shows that BP is taking illegal, alternate ways of running their business and refineries.

    One sentence Lustgarten wrote that stands out to me is: “He rebranded the company from British Petroleum to BP and added the “Beyond Petroleum” tag line to put it in a more cosmopolitan, ecological light.” I think this is deceiving because BP is trying to lie to the public for business saying they are healthy and ecological for the economy and the ecosystem. But they turn around and dump toxic waste in wells that are not only harmful to the ecosystem but against federal law.
   

Another sentence that i agreed with was: “In the Gulf of Mexico, BP had more spills than Shell between 2000 and 2009, even though Shell produces more oil there.” This stood out to me because this shows that they are corrupt and inefficient in keeping there refineries up to date and safe for workers to work in. This lead to many casualties and mishaps in the BP workplaces that had to do with their workers.

    I do strongly agree with Lustgarten that BP is corrupt and unsafe for everyone who works their. One reason why is because the have so many problems and casualties that could have all been avoided if BP took responsibility and kept their refineries and other work sites safe and up to date

    What i appreciate about this writer’s work is how much detail and info he was able to dig on BP’s problems. I look forward to seeing what he writes next because he will probably entertain me with knowledge of over corrupt.
