Hello everyone,

I'm Arielle, a 7th grade student in Maryland. Since the begining of school my class has been preparing to make our silent films. First we had to learn about the machines used to make the first silent films. Sadly we didnt get to use those to make our films. We use Imovie '06. That's almost as good. Then we watched a film about Thomas Edison, "The Wizard of Light". That was a great movie about when Thomas Edison invented the kinetoscope. Then we got right to the point and started filming, but there were some limits. First, we could only use one shot, thats hard because if you mess up you have to start all over again. Second, it had to be silent. You can see why thats difficult. Then the film could only be 50 seconds long. On top of that we only got one class period to edit. To give you a sneak peak my film is about a theif, he tries to steal a purse and ends up getting beaten with it. The films will be up soon.

P.S the film above is called "The Kiss", it's one of the first films. It comes in flip book form too. A film like this would blow your mind in 1895.

Keep you posted,

            Arielle

Hi Arielle
I find it interesting that the movie also had a flip-book format. I've done flip books with students before (as we were making stopmotion movies) and found it interesting to create. I'm glad you are digging into the history of movies. I bet that will make you a better filmmaker in the days ahead.
