What does education mean to me?

Discussion
Nov 11, 2009

Education to me was not that important in the past, I would always wonder what the reason for school was. I did not like school mainly because I did not like getting up early and then having to do work. My attitude towards school was always the same all the way through about high school cause I had no one to look up to my parents were divorced since I was 3 and they never made it passed middle school and my sister and brother were also middle school drop outs so my way of thinking was really not that great.

At this point I’m understanding life a lot more and education does play a big part, it’s what you need to succeed in life. In order for me to pursue my education I had to give up working and make more time for my education. The only difficulty I have is trying to get back in the whole learning system, listening to what needs to get done and by when. This is a real big commitment for me now that I can say my hands are pretty full trying to raise my kids and making sure they are also doing well in school. I don not want them to have the kind of mentality I had growing up. They are the reason to keep me moving forward and to show them no matter how old or big you are school is what helps you in the future to succeed in life.

Education for me in the future will really pay off. I will be getting a better career and higher pay and be able to support my own family without having to depend on anyone. I’d be working in something that I really enjoy and making a difference in other peoples lives not just my own. Right now I know times are hard financially but I know that at the end it is really going to pay off and that’s what counts the most.

Dear Adriana,

I enjoyed reading your post “What does education mean to me?” because growing up you was never around an influenced family when it came to school. One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: “At this point I’m understanding life a lot more and education does play a big part, it’s what you need to succeed in life.” I think this is interesting, because now you’ve realized how important education can be for your future. Having a good education can get you into a great college and a good paying job.

Another sentence that I liked was: “ I don not want them to have the kind of mentality I had growing up.” This stood out for me because this show that you don’t want your kids making the same mistake you once made. I can tell that you want the best for your kids, so they can have a bright future.

Your post reminds me of something that happened to me. When I was in middle school, I hated waking up so early. I always had good grades, but waking up was always my problem! I never dropped out and I’m not planning on it.

Thank you for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because I like how you stood up for yourself and went back to school. You said your kids were your motivation and I found that interesting because you are setting an example for them in the future as well as making your life better.

Nice

Dear Adriana:
I support the main idea of your post, "What does education mean to me?," because education is key to success and many do not realize this. I am glad that you chose the right path and kept on striving to improve your knowledge; even with all the problems you are experiencing. It takes a strong person to do this.

One sentence you wrote that stands out for me is: "In order for me to pursue my education I had to give up working and make more time for my education." I think this is difficult to do because in order to sustain yourself and keep paying tuition you have to work, unless you have economic support. I understand it is not easy to do both work and go to school but sometimes it is needed.

Another sentence that I admired was: "This is a real big commitment for me now that I can say my hands are pretty full trying to raise my kids and making sure they are also doing well in school. I don not want them to have the kind of mentality I had growing up." This stood out for me because it is inspiring that you want better to your children. I can relate to this because coming from a working class family my parents want to see me prospect in life and make something big of myself.

I definitely agree with you that education will pay off at the end. One reason I say this is because nowadays it is very important to have a high school and college diploma. Many jobs will not hire if not without this.

Thanks for your writing. I look forward to seeing what you write next, because you seem very well educated and motivated to continue with your educations. I really enjoy to read about people who are serious about their education.
