What makes a design visually pleasing to the eye?

Design is the use of color, shape, imagery and negative space. These four concepts are essential in creating a design that is visually pleasing to the eye. Color choice, while seeming fairly easy, is actually one of the most difficult things to pick. Colors have emotional attachments that will directly affect how the reader/ viewer feels about the page. Use of color can make a layout significantly more pleasing to the eye, or the exact opposite, significantly less pleasing to the eye. Space is useful in directly the reader through a layout. Specific shapes can be used to group objects or show a relationship between two things. Soft shapes, like circles or curvy lines, give a more feminine look to things while shapes with sharp edges like squares and rectangles give a more masculine look to a design. Imagery, or pictures, is important to every design. More often than not imagery is what first draws the reader/viewer into the design; because of this imagery is essential to the success of a layout. Negative space is a relatively new idea, used to lead the reader around a page. Negative space is the space on a layout that is blank or empty. Poor layout designers try to squish tons of information, pictures and words into a space, however the busy look often turns off the reader/ viewer. It is important to use negative space to help balance out the important parts of the design. Negative space gives a relaxed feel to a design and makes things easier to read, find and understand.

Today I found these interesting facts about Design. I used ‘Google’ as the search engine typed in ‘layout design’, and found this website about the basics of web design. It was very helpful and gave specific tips on how and why these things are important to design. At the base of every magazine or website design I believe all four of these principles are thoroughly looked at to create the best layout possible.

Website design is essential for any business looking to attract young customers. However, we must remember that when trying to please teens, we cannot forget about adults. Website design is a tricky business; you have to toe the line between a website that can keep a teenager’s attention and a website that doesn’t confuse an adult. A website that is relatively easy for a teen to navigate through might be ten times harder for a less tech-savvy adult to navigate through. When designing a website it is important to remember these basic principles:
  1. Speed: Don’t overload the site with graphics or javascript which will cause it to be very sluggish. Also realize that not everyone has fast internet connection so if the picture or long paragraph of text isnt necessary DON’T USE IT! Search engines now have a feature that rates sites, one of the catagories is speed and if you score poorly people might not want to take the time to visit your site.
  2. Font size: can those with vision other that 20-20 clearly read your site? Can anybody read the text style and font that you have chosen? Does the font and style match the theme of your website or business? Can people quickly glance at your site and scan it or do they have to sit and wade through piles of text?
  3. Color choice: What kind of colors match your style of business? Although loud bold colors grab a readers attention it also is very unattractive to some people. While teenagers might enjoy the bright oranges and yellows, there are others who cannot stand the bright colors and will exit your site.
  4. Cross platform: If you design your website on a mac will it look the same on a PC?
