Where did blood diamonds originate?

The exact date when blood diamond mining began is unknown. However, the international community became aware not long after the civil war in Sierra Leone and Angola in the 1990's, due to it's manipulation of the practice to further war efforts. After Angola's cease fire after trying to gain independence from Portugal, an election took place. Once the candidate the rebel group supported was defeated, the rebel group waged war on the government, controlling a majority of the country's mines in the process. This group was called the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). In places where rebel groups such as this hold control, especially over the diamond mines, it enables them to use their profits to buy weapons and supplies to prolong the war. This takes away much needed funds from other parts of the nation often leaving its citizens in deep poverty.

Delaney,
Very interesting research. I didn't know much about the connection between blood diamonds and the spur of war in Angola, and it sounds like they're a lot more interconnected than I would have thought. It seems different areas of Africa have always had problems with rebel groups, more so than I've heard from any other countries. The idea of researching the history of blood diamonds is very good and should make for a really great paper, way to go!
