Paul's Advisory : Activity

College

I cant wait to go to college. I want to go out of state far away. After college i want to live alone and buy a car. I want to buy a house im tired of new york and living the same life everyday. I do the same things everyday its just a new day. I want to become a doctor that delivers babies. I want to go to college for 4 years and go to medical school. This means i would graduate college at the age of 21 and then go to medical school for another 3 years. School never ends it continues and continues. Sometimes i say that i hate school but you cant say that because later on you get the consequences. That's why i stay in school. I want to be the first one to graduate in my family. My mother and father didn't graduate. My mother got her GED and now is a home attendant. I want to live in California or Florida. I really dont want to get marry or have kids. Well i want one child and adopt one also.

Storyspace: Storyspace

Remember Storyspace?

I do!

I created a hypertext story one summer about 5 years ago, and I led a group of Writing Project teachers into this hypertext space — both as writers and readers. Our main hurdles had to do with:

  • the learning curve that it took to understand the software and to overcome its bugs (especially in the Windows version)

  • the price of the software

  • the less-than satisfying ways it exported to html

  • the difficulty of sharing our stories over the Internet.

Many of the hurdles have been met by Hypertextopia. I’m excited about the possibilities this opens up for bringing hyper-textual thinking back into my curriculum.

I think that the boys are the fastest too. The sisters die because they are slow. Darfur Is Dying

I noticed that you can’t play with the father, Rahman, on Darfur Is Dying because they kill him if he gets caught.

If you play Darfur Is Dying, sometimes it will be fun.

I noticed that Mahdi always gets the water, and sometimes he runs under the army cars with guns. Darfur Is Dying

Since the filtering change is my project, I should probably add some comments.

The request form is now at http://www.nycboe.net/offices/diit/filtering/
If you go to the old location it will redirect you automatically. The
form only works from VLAN 2.

Manhattan and Bronx schools will get switched over next week on Monday
night. Everyone else has already been put on Websense.

Elementary schools seem to have two schools of thought - some want to
allow kids to play games, others detest them.

High schools range from those that want Entertainment blocked (no more
MTV, BET, WWE) and those that want to unblock Instant Messaging,
Streaming Media and Internet Radio. A few of those schools have toyed
with the idea of unblocking Social networking, but only one has
followed through. Streaming Media involves video content within
websites, created and hosted by those sites. Sites like youtube that
host user-created video fall under Social Networking.

The two biggest differences between Symantec and Websense are 1) no
more reading the text of webpages (which is why it is faster) and 2)
much more accurate categorization (it isn’t perfect, but Symantec was
swiss cheese).

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Who am I?

PaulBanner

Paul Allison has been been teaching ever since he graduated from Hunter College, CUNY in 1983. After a few years in the desert (Utah), and a couple of years at the High School of Art and Design, NYC, he had a wonderful dozen years at University Heights Secondary School, Bronx, NY, where he learned that doing school better didn’t have to be the same-old, with more effort. After that, Paul worked with English Language Learners at the International High School in Queens for three years.

After 9/11, there was a lot of talk about doing meaningful work. At the same time, Paul was finding himself being seduced by new forms of literacy on the Internet. An opportunity to become a “studio teacher” of technology at East Side Community High School, NYC presented itself in the Summer of 2002, and Paul taught "New Journalism" at ESCHS for five years. In the Fall of 2007, Paul moved back the the Bronx to teach English in the 7th Grade at East Bronx Academy for the Future.

Another community that Paul is a part of is the New York City Writing Project. He was a participant in the NYCWP’s Summer Invitational in 1985, and he has worked for the NYCWP in various ways ever since. Currently, with Felicia George, Paul is the NYC Technology Liaison for the National Writing Project.

Writing on paper and blogging are very different because you have a different atmosphere and the things you tend to write about are different.  Online you want to write about what is going and the most recent issues but on paper we tend to write about the same topics that have been going on for a long time. Online writing tends to be more informative while on paper writing is more analytical.

Myspace and youth voices are different as well because myspace isn't for school so you can write more about your personal life and youth voices is read by more than just your friends so you might tend to stick to the topics and not add personal information.

Next week on my blog I hope to add different feeds to my reader so I can stop writing about just the news or sports.  Recently those were the only topics I was interesting but the news is so depressing and volleyball is over so there are no good sports to write about.  I'm learning that there are more interesting news stories I could have written about or just other things I'm interested in such as music or movies. I would like to keep the random and funny news articles every now and then because they tend to be quite intriguing as well.

When I sit at my computer, preparing myself to write virtually anything, I instantly feel as though it's easier to write. Like my creative juices are flowing more. When I sit in a class room full of other students, on the other hand, I feel different. Possibly because in class we are told what to write about, as where when you write for recreation the possibilities are endless.

Being part of the "myspace generation" has its ups and downs. Myspace is a great way to stay in touch with people, but the popularity aspect of it drives me crazy. There is a big difference to me between blogging and talking with people on myspace. Myspace has more of a social feel (Although I have posted the occassional blog on there too.); you can say whatever you want to any one of your friends, they reply, and a conversation begins. When blogging, however, it's more of a one sided thing. You can say whatever you wish, but it isn't necessarily in a conversational manner.

The topics I blog about are important- at least to me.  A good portion of the stories we blog about are relavent, if not important, whether it be saving oceanic coral reefs or  the national debt. It is important to be concise and get your point across, in case you have noticed; thats what this blog provides, a platform to improve your writting, connect with others and express yourself. I think snippets are a very good thing to put in your posts, though not critical. For me the snippet anchors my posts, it drives home the main point of the article, or in some cases injects that little bit of intrests or shock value needed.

I have been posting about issues that catch my attention, like the national debt, what is news worthy and scientific research. Next week I hope I can find anothe
