Hey this is Antonique presenting to you about Potential Problems with Podcast.
Podcasting seems to be the most efficient way to access and provide listeners with productive talk radio and music. But have you asked yourself, why are podcast mostly talk-radio? Well, after reading an article entitled Storm Clouds Gather over Podcasting By Michelle Kessler of USA TODAY I believe I have some answers. Unlike streaming music podcast travel over airwaves therefore they don’t apply to traditional radio licenses. What I mean by this is that when a user subscribes to a podcast, media files are then downloaded onto that person’s computer. When the media file is then downloaded to the person’s computer, as a result the viewer will end up with a copy of the audio or video file on their hard disk. Due to this accessibility the media files can be copied, edited or redistributed freely.
Streaming on the other hand the media file is not downloaded onto the person’s computer. The file is instead streamed from the media server right into the person’s computer. Once the “streaming” comes to a halt no files exists that can be copied, saved or redistributed. Because of this record labels continuously worry about the songs being played during podcast are likely to be pirated. It is extremely easy for a listener of a podcast to obtain the songs out of the desired podcast and turn the song or songs into music files. A lawyer at the Recording Industry Association of America makes a statement about podcast downloader’s “they are getting a copy of an entire program… unprotected copy that they can do whatever they want with”.
Another issue is in the form of money. What if podcasters decide they want an equivalent license to radio shows? This might have a price that comes along with it , for the listeners as well. This is so because if podcasters (those who make the shows) have to pay then the listeners will most likely have to pay as well.
For now all you podcast listeners enjoy your FREEdom in all sense of the word. Your accessibility to the pod cast online allow you to download music from radio shows, you might not necessarily here your favorite song but your local band trying to get their five minutes of fame just might pop up. So remember keep listening, rewinding and fast forwarding at you leisure. For next time, this is Antonique have a great listen!
