The cry for a playoff in the world of college football became even louder in the wake of the recent selection of Oklahoma and Missouri to play in the Big 12 championship game. The Big 12 South held Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma, three of the best teams in the nation. Texas beat Oklahoma 45-35 early in the season, Texas Tech beat Texas 39-33, and Oklahoma beat Texas Tech last week 21-65. This left all three teams with one loss on the season. The debacle, however, came when a three way tie arose. In the Big 12 rules, if there is a tie in one of the sub conferences then whichever team leads in the BCS standings wins the sub conference. Oklahoma came out on top of the BCS and will now play Missouri in the Big 12 Conference much to the demise of Texas who trailed behind Oklahoma by one spot in the BCS standings.
If Oklahoma can beat Missouri they will assure themselves a chance in the BCS Championship game and play the winner of the SEC championship game between Florida and Alabama. Another problem arises with a Florida victory. If Florida wins and meets Oklahoma in the BCS Championship game they will both be one loss teams. With the likes of BCS busters Utah and possibly Boise State, both with undefeated records, not being able to play for the national championship brings up even more cry of an unfair system. It is time for a playoff system in college football to give the likes of Texas a chance of avenging their loss of Texas Tech and a chance for Utah and Boise State to play for the title.
Why a college football playoff would be good • Brings college football into conformity with major sports. • Gives fans what they want. Surveys, including those done for USA TODAY, consistently show a solid majority for a playoff. • Ends the confounding, split-championship nonsense. There's one winner, period. • It's fairer than narrowing the national championship picture to a mere two teams and one game. • It's lucrative. The most recent playoff plan seriously shopped to major football-playing schools would have grossed nearly $376 million a year, more than double current bowl payouts.
