To lie or not to lie...

Discussion by: c_holl123 on Sun, 2010-05-02 20:34 with 0 comments

Everyone always says that honesty is always the best policy but when is too much honesty more hurtful than just saying the lie. This thought popped into my head watching Seinfeld one day after school. It was the episode where George breaks up with his needy girlfriend and when she asks him his reasons and tells him to be honest he really does tell the truth. This winds her up in a mental hospital where George has to go talk to her and convince her what he said wasn't true. Basically its about whether or not its socially acceptable to always tell the truth when asked and what are the situations where lying is more merciful than really digging into that person. When looking up lie on dictionary.com it states

Getting ready to venture into the crazy world of college in approximately 4 months and Im beginning to wonder what exactly will effect me when I move all the way across the country. I hear these horror stories about student who leave and have terrible homesickness, hate their new school, and come home after one semester shattered and broken. When i hear these stories i think "is that going to be me." When reading an article about separation anxiety for college students it shows how many people suffer from this sort of anxiety.

When researching what to write about this week I saw an article that stuck me about "the oscar curse." This curse was about how after an actress wins the best actress award they end up breaking up with their spouses, which posses the frequently asked question "can you have both a successful career and a successful relationship." Also you have to ask yourself if someone can cheat on Sandra Bullock an oscar winning movie star then where is the hope for the rest of us? From this article it talks about Sandra Bullock, Kate Winslet, Reese Witherspoon, Hillary Swank, Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry, and Julia Roberts. All of these actresses broke up with their significant other soon after winning that coveted best actress award. In the article it states.

The biggest Loser: uplifting or dangerous

If anyone knows me at all then they know that I have a small obsession for the "Biggest Loser" on NBC. Every Tuesday (except for those two unfortunate weeks during the Olympics when it was off) i rush home, hurry and finish my dinner and settle in for a good two hours of my favorite show. I dont know what it is about the show that is so fascinating, could it be the pure competition of it all, or people striving to change their lives for the better. Well whatever it is im hooked and I dont see myself quitting anytime soon. However because of my love for the show it shocked and astoinded me when i was walking through my neighborhood grocery store and i glanced at the rows of glossy magazines and saw the biggest loser. Naturally i picked it up and began reading the article. The article was about how the contestants from the show eventually gained the weight back in real life and how they were using dangerous methods in order to lose weight, such as an excess of exercise and literally starving themselves. Online i was reading an article written by a fitness expert who explained some startling facts.

Rude and Obnoxious

Intrusive, obnoxious, over-stepping what do these words describe either a very annoying person or a house guest. Recently I learned what this really means when I had to stay with one of my friends over a long weekend when my parents were out of town. While I did try to make myself as agreeable as possible and help out as much as I can still it must be a little annoying to have someone there when you are trying to relax. I mean you cant do all your normal "Im alone" traits such as singing in the shower, generally being unpleasant and blasting your music into oblivion. Certain things you can do only when you are alone in your house. I learned about this when some of my family friends stayed with us for about a month while they were traveling around the U.S i never thought they were going to leave. They were nice people but there is just something about someone staying with you that makes you act a little differently and you cant just let loose. On the internet i found some basic rules for being an appreciate house guest.

Over the past weekend I went to the film “teenage paparazzi.” In this film it delves into the world of the tabloids and how our culture is completely infatuated by these so-called stars and their lives. In this movie one movie star follows around a 13 year old paparazzi and interviews the stars effected by it. Overall i thought the movie was really good and really made me think about the world that we live in. However i did think that there were some contradiction within the movie. If the star is so concerned about how media obsessed the culture is getting then he really got into the wrong industry. Its all well and good now that hes bringing this to the attention of the public now that hes made millions of dollars and he will no doubt make millions of dollars on this movie.

Not quite as fine as they thought

This past weekend I went to the movies and I tried to go see the newly released movie "Lovely Bones" to my great disappointment i this movie was not released in Utah! So unhappily I had to see "Everybody's fine." I went into this movie with a open mind thinking that maybe it would be good and that there might be a few funny parts scattered through out. But no. The whole movie was a depressed run down of a man whose wife has recently died and is trying to get his whole family together for the holidays. Through a couple of wacky circumstances he learns his whole family of collapsing and the reason for all of this is him. Through the movie we see 3 of his children and how they are trying to act like "everybody's fine"" when in reality they are just lying to him and their lives are really in shambles. Not the kind of movie I was hoping for on a upbeat Saturday night. To make matters worse in the end you find out that his youngest son that has been mysteriously missing through out the whole movie is actually dead and that all of his children were keeping this information from them.
