Reclaiming Your Topic- Hoarding

Discussion by: Abby_B on Wed, 2013-01-30 20:10 with 1 comments

The most important thing that people should take from my topic is that hoarding is a syndrome that many people suffer from. Hoarding has many forms such as animals hoarding. It is usually generated from family or a traumatic event. Consumerism has had a large impact on hoarding in more recent years but it is not the main ‘cause’ of hoarding.

I recently did more research on my topic of hoarding using two new sources, Twitter and blogs. These were unusual sources I'm not accustomed to but they linked me to new sources.

For my research project I will be contacting psychologist John Waterbury who specializes in hoarding. I want to get his opinion on my research question on whether or not consumerism has an impact on modern day hoarders. I would like him to give me a hoarder that I can contact to interview about their lifestyle. I would like John Waterbury to give me detailed facts about hoarding, especially the psychological side. I am also going to contact the Salt Lake Behavioral Health which is a psychiatric hospital.

While researching on Google using the site operator I found three articles including .org, .edu, and .gov. The first article I researched was from the PETA website and discussed a type of hoarding called animal hoarding. People who animal hoard have a mental illness that can cause problems for the animals, family, and community. The environment for the animals within the hoarders home is very and unsafe and unsanitary.

From my research on EBSCO I found multiple articles on hoarding. The three I decided to research were about differentiating hoarding and OCD, the similarities between hoarding and ADHD, and hoarding in children. In the first article I read I found that there are multiple tests used to measure OCD and hoarding.

In an article from the Huffington Post, titled "Teens With Lesbian Parents Do Better At School, Generally Happier In Life, Study Finds", it is discussed that there is a new study out that teens that live in a home with two mothers are more successful in school and happier in life. “Adolescents with Lesbian Mothers Describe Their Own Lives", studied 78 teens for a 26 years and they found that those teens had very high GPA's and had a strong relationship with family. The teens in this study said that they plan on attending college and had an open-minded attitude.

Gay Parents
There is a lot of debate in the 2012 elections about gay rights, marriage, and parents. Many people support gays and that they should be legally allowed to marry one another but others say they should not be able to. A huge factor that goes into gay rights is religious views. This year's election will play a huge impact on the gay community

Presidential Candidate Views

After taking the select smart presidential candidate selector I found out what my main views are for selecting a candidate. When filling out the survey I did not know a lot of information about taxes and employment because I do not pay taxes and I currently do not have a job so I was a little confused. I found that I had strong views in the categories of the environment and gay rights. I wanted a candidate that believed that global warming and climate change is caused by humans and would find a way to stop it. I also wanted a candidate who would legalize marriage for gays.

In the book 1984 Orwell is predicting what the world will be like in 1984. Some of his predictions are similar but others are a little off. In 1984 the entire community has 'telescreens' that monitor people's lifestyles to make sure they are following Big Brother. Telescreens can be compared to televisions or a web cam. Webcams are a way of viewing what others are doing but for a social reason, not to watch people.
