A Photo Holds a Thousand Words

There are hundreds of news stories a day, thousands a month and millions a year. But there is something every news story has, besides a sassy punch line or good looking reporter. A picture. As a hobby, photography has become a big part of my life, I love to take pictures of any and everything and often leave the house without some kind of camera with me. Professional photographers too take their cameras everywhere when on the job, looking for that one moment that expresses everything they see on their trip.

How Accurate Are Our Memories?

Discussion by: alex.clark. on Wed, 2012-04-25 19:00 with 0 comments

Think back to the first memory you have of your childhood, a flash of a tree flashing by as you fly by on a bicycle, or that time in the backyard when you wanted to dig a hole to China. Think back to the day the World Trade Center towers fell, what were you doing? Who were you with? What did you see?

Hilary Rosen vs. Ann Romney

There is a game politics like to play with one another, twisting eachother's words and sentences, facial expressions and gestures to work against their opponent. This past week, political powerhouses Hilary Rosen and Ann Romney did a little more than clash, when Rosen, a Democratic Strategist, made a truthful, but apparently "two-faced" comment towards Ann Romney. Wednesday night (4/11) on CNN Rosen was asked about the supposed "war on women" (a term she doesn't approve of), and how most women in today's voting polls are showing interest and worry in the economy above anything else.

Student Athlete

At Judge, being a student athlete is a bit more than "common". Often, the best athletes are also the best students, so what is the trait that makes them so successful as both students and athletes?

Procrastination

There is a virus I have been trying to avoid since I was in middle school, a virus so strong and powerful that even the best of students suffer from it. The procrastination virus. It has hit me rather hard in high school, despite my best efforts to avoid its powerful and enticing ways. All types of students have at one time suffered from procrastination, whether it be because there were other more important projects to do, or simply because you just wanted to sit on the couch instead of study for the math test, procrastination has been an all too familiar guest for us all.

You Get All That From Reading?!

Discussion by: alex.clark. on Wed, 2012-03-21 10:49 with 0 comments

One of my favorite classes I have at Judge is Creative Writing, our new assignment is to write a Children's Book. It got me thinking about how important reading to children is. My childhood wouldn't have been complete without the books my parents read to me. So why is reading to children so important? What is so special about children's books that helps young kids' brains develop?

Awareness. This one word is the center of Invisible Children’s 2012 campaign to stop Joseph Kony and his militia of child soldiers in Uganda, Africa. Invisible Children would like to make us AWARE of many things, most importantly and most recently they launched the “Cover the Night” campaign to make every single person in America aware of Joseph Kony and his child soldiers.

Stress.

There are many ways to deal with stress. It is as simple as that; some people however, refuse to take the easy way out and make situations more stressful than necessary. Stress can be managed in very simple ways starting with this:
Write down what scares you most:
Often pressure and stress arise from situations where you can easily fail. By writing out the things that scare you most about your stress, you release them from your brain.
Embrace the Silence:

Online Library Critiques

Writing a five stage research paper is a rather daunting task; especially when there is no limit to the type, style or number of resources you can use. With my city library card, I searched the databases, specifically: The Historic New York Times, Newsbank, Utah Digital Newspaper and World Book Online. All these databases are very different, but very distinct with both positives and negatives to their sites.
World Book Online:
