Youth Voices Reflection

Discussion by: liamm on Mon, 2010-06-14 10:48 with 0 comments

Youth voices served as a good bridge between my personal and school online network.  I liked the site because it promoted me to express whatever i was feeling in relation to my work.  I contributed to the Youth Voices community by posting the best of my work along with text explanations.  I also do my best to comment on other peoples work to give youth voices a real feeling of community.  It is easy to post text discussions but once we had to incorporate images it became more difficult.  Formatting the discussion with the image was difficult because of text wrapping.  After submitting many different posts i was able to determine the best method.  I wish there was better interaction between the members of Youth Voices.

Henri Cartier-Bresson Decisive Moment

Something I have become interested in learning more about is the decisive moment. I started to become interested in Henri Cartier-Bresson because while comparing my photos to his, I realized how staged my photos look. So far I have learned Henri grew up in Paris where he attended a small catholic school, Ecole Fenelon. Henri tried studying music but he lacked skill in that area. Henri's uncle was a painter and he introduced Henri to oil painting. Although Henri painted for a few years he eventually switched to photography.  This information is from Essential Moments Photography. The source of this information is made to promote Larry Brunt's photography. Larry has one of Henri's photos on his sight because he says he is one of his influences.

How Foods Appearance Effects How Appetizing It Is

I am exploring food photography. I am interested in this because I like seeing how the image of food affects of how appetizing it is.

editted doughnutI took the first photograph, and you can see two doughnuts stacked on top of one another The color of the doughnuts has been changed and new background has been inserted. I know this photo was taken in my house on a sunday afternoon. I had just purchased the two doughnuts at the Krispy Kreme store in Penn Station. My interpretation of this photograph is that the photo was shot in digital macro because there is high detail of the doughnut. Also the photo was heavily edited in photoshop because the doughnuts are a different color and there is a new background.

It has been said that one image is worth a thousand words. This could be true about this photograph because it is edited, colorful, and overwhelming. It reflects my theme in that the edits i made to this photo caused the food to look very unappetizing while the actual quality of the food hasn't changed.

How am I doing

How am I doing?  As far as my theme goes I have had some difficulties in developing it.  On my first post I focused on digital macro photographs and looking at how food is unappetizing from a close perspective.  On my next post (which i believe I accidentally posted as private) was supposed to focus on the affects of different lighting techniques.  Due to a lack of equipment, I was unable to experiment with lighting in my second photo post as much as I had wanted to.  I am currently having difficulty expanding my theme but I am going to try looking at food in different environments.

Food and its insides

In this photograph that I took, you can see a digital macro shot of a hamburger.  The shot looks like it was taken after a person had already taken a few bites.  I like this picture because of the contrast of the different ingredients and their colors. The picture has a very small frame so the only objects visible are the individual ingredients of the hamburger. I know this picture was taken mid day on a Saturday.  After my friend and I purchased the burgers we went and sat on the benches outside of the Natural History Museum. My interpretation of this photograph is that  photographs of partially eaten food look unappetizing.

This photograph expresses complexity, color, and flash. It reflects my theme in that it captures not only food from the outside, but from the inside as well.
